Greetings from Ireland, I am looking at the possibility of getting some coilovers for my MX5. I tend to use it on the road most of the time with maybe 3-4 track days a year, I'm not chasing ultimate laptime here and have run standard shocks and springs on track without issue (comical roll angles aside).

Just wondering what people think the best compromise is between road and track, but biased towards road? Keep in mind Irish roads tend to have rubbish surfaces and the odd unexpected bump mid corner so I'm really not looking for anything that's going to bounce me off the road when I encounter one of those smile

It depends on your budget really, the more you spend the more adjustment or freedom to spec them you have.

Ideally don't run springs suited more to trackdays or racing as these will be quite stiff. If you have the option to 'spec' your own springs then ask the manufacturer for something between stock and trackday so you get a performance upgrade without being too harsh. As far as damping goes, the less damping you run the more compliant the shock will be over higher frequency road bumps.

Check out companies such as Gaz, BC, and Nitron to get a feel of what is available.

Thanks for feedback, shouldn't be too limited by budget, I'll check the options you mention, cheers.

Meister R all day. Swapped a £1800 set of TRD fot the £650 Meister R on a Glanza.....totally transformed it.....best mod i've done ever on any car...Currently have the more Expensive GT1 Meister R on an Evo 9, far better than the Tein's i removed....and i'd even take them over the EXE-TC remote reservoir set up i had on a previous Evo 9.

Best coilovers for the road I've tried by far....and a bargain price...no affiliation....just a happy customer

I'm running Meister-R on mine, with a fast road alignment from WIM, very happy with the results. Car was like a boat before.

I've heard lots of good things about the Meister R stuff.

Question: What is compliance and bad road surface ride like in comparison to the standard suspension?

I'm also looking to upgrade soon.

Can the same - GOOD THINGS - be said about the NB MeisterRs ?

I put Meister R Sportives on our old NA. They're fixed rate, a bit stiffer than standard, and with spring rates that seem to work really well for normal road use. They're a damn sight better than the 120,000 mile old stock suspension that came off, put it that way! If you don't need adjustable damping, I'd recommend them as a budget option.

I've honestly never driven an MX5 on the road and thought "yep, needs stiffer suspension"

Especially over st road surfaces.

And yet the stiffer sprung MeisterR will ride immeasurably better than stock stuff.

Have had, stock, tein, koni, BC Racing and some random Japanese stuff which was rock hard and awful, and MeisterR. MeisterR wins every single day, no question

Really? They’re well soft with loads of body roll.

You're welcome to that opinion.

For road use, as in, roads that are rarely snooker table smooth, I prefer an element of compliance and if the trade off is some body roll, I'm totally fine with that.

I'd definitely want a more focused setup for track use, undoubtedly, but for road use? I'd honestly choose the standard suspension.

I'm curious about Meister's tho, and would like a go in a car with them fitted.
