POR 15 paint system

Anyone used this chassis treatment and just how good is it really? Is it a mare to use? or is it really the petrolheads prayer answered to the rust problem.

Gloves?, I wear one of those cheap decorating suits from B&Q. Trust me, if you get it on your skin it ain't coming off.

I painted my patio umbrella base in it and its been out all winter and theres not a sign of rust on it. I take this as a good sign cause it was powder coated and the coating was flaking away - much like my chassis outriggers.

I've used about 4 litres of it recently, it is really great stuff.

I agree about the gloves as well. I wore a cheap pair one day and got my hands covered in it, it took 2 weeks to come of, and that was with trying everything (wire brush included eek!).

It seems really good stuff to me. I know a few people who use it on old cars and it works very well.

Oh and if you do get it on your skin, don't assume wiping clean with white spirit will have got it off. It won't. And your hands will go black. For quite a while.

To make it easier to use when laying flat on my back under the car I poured a small amount into a plastic cup - and it melted! Very messy and 2 weeks later it's only just come off my hands, arms and face.
Does exactly what it says on the tin - and then some.

its top stuff, used the metal ready on the floor of my mgb and you could see it working on the rust!

Thinners does get it off hands / face.... TBH cant tell difference between generic thinners & POR15 solvent. It actually sprays pretty well BTW.

Thinners gets it off if you catch it before it's dried. If it has dried, you won't budge it, I have on my hands right now unfortunately!

So how much would I need to do the chassis of my cerbera? Would the 473ml or the 946ml tin do? and do you need the solvent?

i did my chassis in Por15 when i did a body off good stuff ,you needs loads of fresh air and a mask as it is pretty potent , i can't remember how much i used now as it was a while ago , i reckon the smaller tin should do it

If you just need to do the outriggers (and probably the top wishbones) then the little tin - anymore and I would go for the big one.

you will suprised how far it spreads ,it is quite loose ,also if you don't like the colours it comes in you can by a special tie primer and paint on any colour you like on top

Thats my job for Autumn sorted, under my Austin with POR15.

Do you have to wire brush to bare metal before application or just remove flackey stuff?

To do it right you need to remove rust to bare metal, degrease with 'Marine Clean' prep the metal with 'Metal Ready' and then paint on POR15.
The POR15 paint coating can be affected by UV so they recommend a top coat. Any paint will do once the POR15 has gone off.

UV will only discolour but won't damage the paint also you can't paint staright on you need a tie primer and don't use hammerite on top

i personally removed all flakey stuff ,quick sand,marine clean ,metal ready,2 coats of por15 ,primer,2 coats finished paint
