Engine knock between 1500 to 2000 RPM
Discussion
Hey guys, please could I get some help with my engine knock!!
I have a 2005 citroen C3 1.4 petrol with around 108900 miles on the clock.
I am getting a knock from the engine between 1500 - 2000 RPM, only when the engine has warmed up.
It sounds like its comming from the right side of the engine. However, cant tell weather it's from the top or the bottom.
I first heard this knock around 6k miles ago. I cant really tell if it has worsened since than. However, if at all it has, it's by a very small amount.
Tried removing the auxiliary drive belt, tried using premium fuel and redex fuel additives, but no difference. Spark plugs are replaced around 10k miles ago, used NGK copper electrode ones.
Oil and filter gets replaced every 5k miles with castrol 10w-40. However, I dont think the previous owner like oil changes as when I opened the rocker cover to replace the gasket, around a year ago, there was some sludge present.
Have uploaded a video of the knock on youtube. Link below
https://youtu.be/BKCC7I4G3-E
Can you experts please guide me on what this can be. Any advise and suggestions will be much appriciated.
Thanks a million.

Sounds very like a rod bearing. Pull the sump and conrod caps and have a look at the bearings.
If youre really lucky (and dont keep driving it and thus make the problem worse) then you might not have scuffed the crank journals and will get away with a new set of shells.
Edit: wait - 6k ago?! feel free to ignore everything i just said. Might just be something falling off. I propose you emloy the diagnostic technique of 'let it get worse until its obvious what the problem is'

Get a friend to help you check.
One in the car with engine running and handbrake on, rock the car a little back and forth with 1st and reverse.
Other standing TO THE SIDE of the engine bay (not in front of the car) and watch how much the engine rocks back and forth on its mounts.
Sounded to me like a perished mount and metal on metal at the right position. If the engine is moving about more than it should then get a pry bar or big screwdriver and check engine mounts and gearbox mounts are bolted up tight and still have some rubber in them.
And get your auxillary belt back on!

If it was something falling off or loose, would it not make the sound continuously? Regardless weather the engine is warm or cold ?

I dont think it's the mounts as all 3 of them have been replaced recently as they were worn. This knock has been present much before the mounts have been replaced and replacement did not make a difference to this knock.
Yes, I have alrady put the auxiliary drive belt back

If it is a literal knocking it could be piston slap, a bearing would have given up the ghost well before 6000 miles and they knock at tick over anyway, does the oil pressure warning lamp come on?
Dual mass flywheels can make a knocking noise when they are on the way out.
Main bearings can rumble but last quite a while, you usually get a low oil pressure warning though.
Check the exhaust manifold heat shield as they rattle when loose.
As it happens under a light load as in video does it do it on a high load, try it in gear and gently let the clutch out to load it up with chocks in front of wheels (make sure you don't do for long as the clutch will be toast).

The oil lamp has never come on when the engine is running.
I dont think this car has a dual mass flywheel. Being a 2005 1.4 petrol producing only 75 hp.
Have checked the exhaust manifold, it's not that:.
Haven't tried the chock method. However, when the car is loaded with around 4 passengers and it's in 3rd at 30mph climbing a hill, something it does start sounding like a diesel. (Very lightly) (it can only be heard if your concentrating on it)
"Quite a while" how long approxamitly?

If it's going to knock, it's most likely to do it under load. This may be a clue that the engine is coked up and developing hot spots, although it could also be that the ignition timing is too advanced or the mixture is wrong. Best to avoid the situation where this happens since knocking can be very damaging to the engine. More revs in a lower gear will probably help avoid it.Put it this way, even if we all agreed that yes its the spurving dingle bearing - then what?
1. Are you taking it apart to fix yourself? If yes, take it apart anyway and have a look.
2. Are you taking it to a mechanic to fix? If yes, take it to him and have a proper diagnosis done
3. Are you deciding between keeping it or selling it? Relying on an internet diagnosis to make that decision is stupid - see 1 and 2.
I honestly never understood these threads. Does anyone really ask for advice on this sort of thing on a forum, then jump straight to a decision?
Tear into the thing OP and post pictures.

Hi guys just an update if someone is reading this.
So it's been almost 10k miles now since I first heard the knock. It does not seem to have worsened.
Lately I tried adding a bottle Wynns super charge oil treatment but it did not make any difference.
I also cut open the oil filter as well as dropped the sump n found no sign any metal in the oil n therefore I did not go on removing the bearing caps. Or should I have?
Also forgot to mention before, I can feel the knocking in the gear leaver. N when I do press the clutch the knocking goes a bit faint n can be heard around 3k revs.
Any suggestion would still be of great help. Thanks a lot.

Hi guys
I have this exact problem with my 206 TU3JP 1.4
Has anyone figured out what this noise is?
I used 10W40 and 20W50 oil but it didn't change anything. It didn't get any worse though
Some mechanics say the rod bearing is bad but I've driven the car with this noise for about 10,000km and it hasn't gotten any worse.
What do you think?
Gudgeon pin (wrist pin)?
Flywheel?
or it is just normal sound of TU3 engines?

Start with the low hanging fruit. Look at engine mounts, gear box mounts, exhaust / back box hangers. If it’s not that simple, start looking at the security of the bolt on ancillary bits. Look at things like aux belt pulleys, and covers. Then , if it isn’t that, think about engine internals. I always look at big end first, then work through the system. If all else fails, fit a couple of banging subs and and amp in the boot, turn it up to eleven, and wait for the engine to go bang. It’s a good excuse to get a new one as well.
