Routine or Monotony...
Discussion
How do you view your day/life?
Me - I find I err towards the monotonous viewpoint.
I drive the same way (only way) to the station every morning. Get a paper whilst people push past etc, stand on the same platform, clatter to work on the same cramped and dirty trains. Exit the same station, walk the same (only sensible route) route to work. Sit at my desk and deal with the same feckless idiots every day.
Then reverse the process some 8 hours later.
Now - I've never been one for being a stickler for routine. I tend to like the spontaneous and imagine I'd HATE proper routine but the more I see people (especially those regimental types who go on WifeSwap etc) I wonder whether it's better to live like that.
The types who live like - dinner at x o'clock, then 30 minutes of conversation, wash the dishes and then clean the house. Then every other week a bout of love-making (ejaculation within 30 minutes) followed by precisely 8 hours and 17 minutes of sleep... and so on ad infinitum always seem to be happy and never bored.
Do you see what I mean?
Anyone love routine like that (obviously it was a little tongue in cheek! ;))? Anyone else get tediously bored easily?
[small]Yep, feeling like a big life-reappraisal is required![/small]

I'm with you on this one. I don't want my life to be a roller-coaster, but I detest routine. I'm a housewife, and not a very good one at that. My mum always said to treat it like a job - start at 9, have a break at 10.30 for a coffee, break at 12.30 for lunch, and so by the time the children are in from school, everything is done.
But I can't live like that. I have too many hobbies and interests. My home is not dirty...I just have piles of books, software cases etc lying around. And my family always have clean clothes and food on the table.
I like waking up not knowing how my day will develop.

I'm lucky that MrRotty earns enough that I don't have to work, but I have done some crap jobs in the past, including working in a call-centre for Screwfix. I just hated everything about doing the same things at the same time every day. When we set up our business we vowed never to work for anyone else ever again. I like the fact that my time IS mine. Other than the routine of getting the boys to school, and collecting them, I generally do what I want, when I want. Ewwww, I'm not that different from little miss Chav!!! Someone give me a job, quick!!

Cheers Jamie. You're totally right but the thought of it scares the bejeesus out of me!
I'm really not worried about losing the material things - I'd trade them for "being happy" anytime. It's just
a) It's surely possible to be happy in a job and still afford the material things
b) I'm worried about jacking it all in, serious life-style rationalisation, not liking it that way and being in a bad position to return to my current lifestyle.
Oh and "if you have an idea, go for it"... there's the rub... I don't have an idea!!
When I was younger, I promised myself I would be ‘free’ of a demoralising work life spent chained to a desk.
Needless to say I am now institutionalised into commuting and work life, and I have come to except this.
It is a means to an end though; it pays for the exciting and unpredictable evenings and weekends. The key is to be able to ‘leave work’ at 5pm (or whatever time said slave driver brandishes a key to release you) and not waste a moment thinking about it until you arrive back at your desk Monday morning.
