In 2011 he was due to drive in the Saturday morning Le Mans Legends race before the main event. He decided to pull out the night before as he had scared himself in qualifying and if he couldn’t be competitive he certainly didn’t want to just make up the numbers. After making his decision he went for a quiet dinner with his whole family in a small village just south of Alencon. As it happens I was in the same restaurant in that same tiny village.
On walking into the restaurant I recognised him immediately; holding court surrounded by his family. Not knowing of his decision to hang up his helmet and not wanting to intrude on this time with his family, I simply sent over a bottle of the best wine on the menu with my compliments. I’ll never forget him looking up and raising a glass. The next day, when I heard he wasn’t racing, the significance of that meal with his extended family became clear.
He truly was the best of us.

I remember seeing him race at the Silverstone Classic about 10/15 years ago. Everyone else in modern safety equipment, and him wearing what looked like the same helmet he wore back in the 50s/60s. Great Man.
I was there, and I remember him driving his OSCA with his usual style. He had FIA dispensation to race his old Herbert Johnson hat I think . He was in many ways the template for the modern F1 driver- very money , and sponsor aware , and he also was good at wrong footing his rivals . Always a clean driver , he'd wave to people he;d overtaken, as if to acknowledge their assistance in the move , when in fact they'd been doing all they could to keep him behind .
In his early career , he came in for some anti -semitic flak too , which from a 2020 perspective sounds both ridiculous and appalling
