1) BMWs. Well marketed German tin tops. The 3 series is the Cortina of it's day and they are mostly driven by t***s.

2) Nightclubs. Smoky, noisy. What's the point?

3) Soccer. The national obsession with this simple child's game is amazing.

4) Television. How can people manage to become vegetables and sit in front of the tube for so many hours? Even Everquest is better.

5) Sunbathing. People use up their valuable holiday time to do nothing whilst exposing their bodies to ageing, cancer causing rays.

8 minutes. I had to think about the other 4 as they are less obvious, then type it in.

1. Any whiney band from Manic Street Preachers, Radiohead, through to Coldplay and Keane.
2. TV
3. Fashion
4. Celebrity culture
5. Most sport

I say most sport because the overrated stuff is invariably mixed up with the celebrity culture.

OMG - I find myself agreeing with BB's list in it's entirity. What does this mean?

I would add that some TV is great - but the majority is rubbish and Reality (chav) TV is the broadcast equivalent of dog excrement that just won't wipe of your shoe.

I also interpret number five as Brucie saying he is a pallid ginge and burns at the slightest hint of a solar ray.

Which I don't. Due to a bit of Italian somewhere in the lineage I go a deep Engelbert brown.

Many of the things identified on this thread are things that people don't like, rather than things that are overrated.

I cannot stand or understand the whole celebrity obsession of our culture. Most celebrities are overrated.

You can actually like something, but nevertheless believe that it is overrated.

I like good claret, but feel that it is overrated by comparison with good red burgundy or piedmont wines.

This is what I find completely over-rated:

1. Radiohead - please kill yourself quickly, quietly and leave me in peace from your misery.

2. Soaps - Does anyone have a job in these? Eastenders has everyother character as a gangsta, and Hollyoaks has a cast of 12 indenti-kit blondes - well Tony ever stop whining?

3. Electric Razors - "You paid £130 for that!!! Like having your facial hair being pulled out by a teeny tiny army with itsy winy tweezers.

4. Fender Guitars - same old crap that was obsolete in 1985, never mind 2005, just shows a good image trumps anything else.

5. The Godfather (all parts) - I simply can't see what the fuss is about????

What's your five things?

I agree entirely with the exception of 3 and 4. As for the Godfather - yes, lumbering and self-indulgent version of a good novel, but if you want to see the real Mafia, watch Goodfellas, Casino, Scarface, Carlito's Way and Donnie Brasco. Plus:

6. Rock stars that are put on a pedestal because they died young - Kurt Cobain, John Lennon, Elvis Presley - all their careers were on the slide, then they died and everyone started worshipping them. Jimi Hendrix and John Bonham are the exceptions as they truly excelled at their musicianship and broke the mould so far as performance goes.

7. BMWs. They aren't all status symbols, especially not the 1-series and 3-series. Good cars yes, but not worth showing off about.

8. Hard-house. THUMPTHUMPTHUMPTHUMPTHUMPTHUMP*snatched bit of meaningless dialogue*THUMPTHUMPTHUMPTHUMPTHUMP*scratchy bit*THUMPTHUMPTHUMPTHUMP. Complete devoid of any musical value whatsoever, designed to rake in entrance fees from people so drugged-up they'd dance to a pneumatic drill.

9. Camera phones. Get a proper camera, it's not much more and you can take better pictures that you actually care about, especially if it's got real film in it.

10. The singles chart. It's skewed by the teenagers and chavs who buy it. Do that Top 40 based on album sales - please - the Crazy Frog will never do an album, will it?

11. Reality TV. In the words of Billy Connolly, 'What has the world come to? We're sitting in a house, watching people sitting in a house'. Watching Reality TV should be a signal for you to go out and get some friends, it really should.

12. Designer labelled clothing. Some of it is monstrously ugly or doesn't suit 98% of the population. But you bought it because of the label. Why? So everyone will know how much it cost...

13. MP3s. Where's the soul? Where's the experience. Put it this way - did you ever go and see a band based on the MP3s you'd heard of theirs? No, because you browsed - physically - and found a CD you thought was interesting, and it surprised you.

14. 4x4s. Luxury car? True luxury is surely about not doing any work. If the vehicle is one whole concession to working, how can it be truly luxurious? Also, they're ugly by their sheer dimensions.

15. Games consoles. I'm sorry, I just don't like them. And I have absolutely no idea why. I guess it's possibly because there's something ever so slightly childish and offputting seeing the TV in the living room plugged into a kid's toy.

16. 200 mph+ hypercars. Yes, but you're not actually going to do 250 mph in your Veyron because you'll run out of road. You'll just be sitting in £1 million's worth of wasted potential that probably will not like corners as much as a VX220 Turbo.
