New tyres for an S2

Hopefully I will soon be the new owner of an S2. I know that the front tyres will need replacing fairly quickly. Any thoughts or favourates on suitable tyres ? The rears are F1 Eagles I think so may well match up but thought see what others are using.

Bridgestone RE720's get my vote.

I've just put 4x RE720's on for £300. Quite reasonable for a top brand and a damn good tyre on the S

SO3s are not made at all. The Goodyear GSD2 is probably the best 205/60/15. The G3s are very good. Prices have generally come down recently. In order to use UHP rubber at the front you need to change rims, as many have done; 215/45/17 is ideal dimensionally and 205/55/16 is pretty good. Annoying isn't it? The only exception is 13" due to race car regs being fixed in the late 60s - this effects everything from Caterhams to F1. It's the same problem for 90% of Wedges. You have to comprimise somewhere: the composition of the rubber, the dimensions of the tyre or fit non-standard wheels. I went for the 205/55/15 option. GreenV8S has gone for the 16" wheel option.

Hi Guys,
I have just taken wheels off my S3 to send in for refurb and am treating to new tyres while I am on - they are currently 17" non standard rims with 205/40/17 which to me look a bit lost in the wheel arches so was going to go for Bridgestone RE040 or RE 050 at 205/45/17 - question is can I go a step up to 215/45/17 ??? and if so is there any benefit in this ???

Yes, you will maintain the correct overall diameter to give you the correct ride height, steering geometry, suspension geometry and speedo reading. The real question is why should you stray away from this size.

I am not an expert but I think it depends on the width of the wheel itself as the arches have enough room for bigger tyres. Are they 7J or 7.5J? I am sure one of the more knowledgable guys will be along soon wih an answer?

Fair point, being aftermarket you need to check ( for example www.toyo.co.uk/index.php?fuseaction=car.t1-s ) either 7 or 7.5 should be OK. I would be amazed if anyone made a smaller width rim for a 17" wheel except for pre-war cars. The tyres are no bigger in dia than standard and will be a maximum of 5mm wider on each side so OK there.
