Quick legal type question re garage

Morning all, seething of Surrey here.
I had a part fitted to my car in January by a reputable sounding garage. However while my car was being serviced at the weekend I asked the mechanic to check the part was okay. And lo and behold he said the part looked several years old and, judging by its condition, was probably the original.
My guess is that the part did not need replacing at all, and indeed wasn't replaced accordingly. I don't know why, but I was a little suspicious when I left the garage, which is why I asked the mechanic to check.
My initial reaction is to storm over at lunchtime and make several assertions about the manager's parents and his relationship with his mother before demanding a refund and the rest. However I thought I'd ask what a more balanced PHer might say to reach a satisfactory resolution.
And breathe...

Interesting. I was thinking of offering them the opportunity to make good this mistake on their part by giving me a refund and a goodwill payment. But suggesting that I'm not sure what to do in these cases, and would he recommend that I contact Trading Standards and the large multinational of which he is a franchisee...

what do you mean more balanced? that's what i'd do
Grrrr! The garage manager was adamant that the work was done, going so far as to swear on his children's lives.
I got the part number from him, which I might be able to track. They offered to take the manifold off to get to the part and have the technician inspect it properly, provided I or the technician paid for the labour if proved wrong.
Guess I'll have to check this before I go further
