The picture on my TV has gone all screwy, it only fills the middle 3rd of the screen horizontally. It's got really really bad pincushion now too (picture is narrower in the middle than at top and bottom). I had a monitor do a similar thing once, but it was already pretty well knackered so I just chucked it.

It had been working fine, I went out of the room for a few minutes and when I came back it was like this. Turned it off overnight and its still like it now.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

TV is about 6 years old, its a Sony widescreen job and was probably top of the range when it was new (donated to us by my gf's dad a few months ago).

Sounds like the sort of thing a TV repairman can fix - but are there any left?

Most likely a power supply fault. Easily repairable, take it to a tv repair shop (don't bother with 'official' sony centres, they're overpriced).

Frame drive chip gone (chip costs about £5) or connection associated with it failed.
