just been through an ANPR operation and waiting round the corner was:
1 x unmarked Skoda vRS
2 x marked Skoda vRS
and what looks like their new play thing. A Honda Civic Type R in dark grey.
I am fully in support of ANPR and unmarked cars for that matter, so well done to the Cleveland BiB's.

I know Cleveland BiB camera vans actively target where people are slowing from 60 to 30 and where there are hills and dips in the road so that they can increase their capture rate at the cost of law abiding people who actively try to stay below the limit but may over-run marginally. As such I disagree that they will treat the 'discrete' fun drivers with any level of special respect. There's a new breed of Cleveland BiB that significantly overstep the mark. A worrying trend. If they are driving these unmarked cars then they will target interesting cars.

I'm not in favour of scamera vans at all. Period.
I don't look for/expect any discretion by the BiB's because I like to drive enthusiastically. I just drive a little more defensively if I am not 100% sure about the other traffic around me.
How anyone can get caught by a moving unmarked car is totally beyond me. Don't the aerials, lack of dealer markings, the protective 'bubble' around the vehicle, the adhering to the speed limit when not on a shout, etc.. give the game away.
If I'm progressing along nicely and come across a car I am not sure of, I slow down to see what happens.
Same as if I am motoring along a motorway and there is a car parked on a slip road, I always show a bit of brake light to indicate that I've spotted him, whether or not I actually need to slow.

IIRC they have an unmarked Merc saloon as well. I saw one of the Skodas and the Merc on the A19 at Portrack a few months back and followed a Skoda last week (I wasn't wearing a shitbelt until I spotted the rear window camera
). Number plates all begin NX04 if anyone's concerned

They also have marked & unmarked Octavias on NX03 plates...i know for i had my test drive in one of them before i ordered the RS
I can also confirm the unmarked Merc and more interestingly, the Civic.

Easy to say, but unfortunately it's twaddle. They don't always stick to the "rules"
Cleveland's first unmarked Silver Octavia RS (51 plate) had only 1 roof aerial, in the same position as the standard radio item. The only difference was in the actual style of the aerial itslef, and was virtually impossible to see unless you knew the car.

I've had 35 years of driving for a living, and keeping my eyes peeled for plod. So far so good - no tickets.
I think if you don't take the piss, and drive like an idiot, then you're not likely to get picked out.
My brother-in-law was a traffic cop for 25 years, and always said that he was basically looking for 'accident waiting to happen' types, and cars/drivers that don't look right.
Also that 90 in an old Mini was going to draw more attention than the same speed in a new BMW.
They can't chase everyone.
