Hi all

Am looking to buy a second hand Golf R 7.5 in the coming couple of months. However I'm not all that sure what options were available.

Would like the Performance Pack and virtual dashboard. What are the other key items to be looking for? I assume the panoramic roof and maybe leather seats? The Akrapovic exhaust looks great but suspect they're rare as hens' teeth.

Thanks v much for any help you can give.

I put the adaptive suspension on mine, it makes the ride a lot more compliant

Virtual cockpit is standard on the R

Leather is a bit naff, pano roof is a bit of a gimmick really and there are cheaper aftermarker alternatives to the akro exhaust. Some people like adaptive suspension, and if you want it to look a little different perhaps the Spielberg wheels might be one to look out for?

This is really useful. Thanks.

Will focus on adaptive dampers and performance pack.

Were heated seats and folding mirrors standard? And are there any sound / nav things I should keep an eye out for? Think I’d want Car Play

Thanks again.

Based on experience of nearly 30,000 miles in a 7.5 R, I would advise against the pan roof at all costs. Ours rattles relentlessly and the dealer is seemingly unable to fix it. Also, try to get the dynamic chassis control , or else avoid the 19" wheels if you cant get it. The low speed ride is crashy and brittle otherwise, and quite unacceptable on anything less than billiard table smooth tarmac. Finally, in my opinion, the 7 speed dsg is an appalling, vile, nasty piece of engineering designed primarily to lower emissions and improve mpg and has no place on this car.

If I could spec another one, it would be a manual, five door, with dcc.

Personally, I don't rate the touch screen thing either and I find it distracting to use when you are driving. Whats wrong with proper switches and buttons.

I notice the mark 8 golf has everything controlled through the touch screen, even heating, so I wont consider one of those.

Ours has a weird 'notch' in the steering at the straight ahead position which is noticeable on the motorway because you cant make a slight adjustment to the steering, it has to be quite forceful which often leads to an over correction. This is apparently something to do with the lane departure nonsense which is always switched off but has this odd effect. I would avoid the lane departure option based on this.

Adaptive suspension would be a must in my view.

My wife has one with 19 inch wheels and no adaptive suspension, and while she doesn't seem to mind having her back pulverised by every bump, I think it spoils an otherwise great car.

I've got the 19" pret wheels with standard suspension and find the ride fine personally. I've also got the dynaudio pack, which seems ok, nothing spectacular. Other than some black wing mirrors and rear windows it's standard.

They come with everything you need really, adaptive cruise, heated seats and apple play - perfect for longish drives.

I read on the golf r facebook group that the clutch's on the manuals will go at some point. I've got a dsg, it's great for commuting, just boring.

I will have had mine 2 years in a few months and I'm bored of it. It's fast and does everything very well, but it's not exciting (like most modern fast cars though I guess!)

I have recently bought an 18 plate R with less than 10k in white silver with 19” silver Pretorias. Option wise mine has leather, adaptive suspension and the climate windscreen. I avoided the pano roof for the reasons that have already been mentioned. I didn’t see any other cars with the climate windscreen - it’s been very handy in these last few weeks....
So far so good - loving the car...

Could you expand a bit on the problems the DSG has. I'm considering a 7.5 estate and that doesn't have a manual option. It would be my first automatic and wouldn't want to get a bad one.... The other option is a 340i touring with the ZF, which gets great reviews but I think the car itself will be more of a cruiser than the Golf.

If you search on 'miserable gearbox' you will come across my thread from January 19 which would be worthwhile reading for you.

I have had the ZF 8 speed in both M135i and 330d previously and it was fantastic in both cars. The 7 speed dsg is a totally different thing.

Personally, I don't think the Golf R is the best Golf. We had the standard 6 MT Mk 7 GTi before the 7.5R and it was far more agile and engaging to drive as well as riding better. I haven't driven one, but I strongly suspect that the best Mk 7 Golf (for me) might well be a manual Clubsport 40 with DCC.

Coming from years of BMW’s, I Got myself in a 7R. Things I think are worth getting have on mine are: 19inch prets! The most desirable wheels, I’m on most the forums people who haven’t got them are constantly hunting for a set! Along with the 19inch wheels it has to be DCC (dynamic chassis control or adaptive suspension), European nav, Apple CarPlay, dyna audio, parking cameras (the lock on the wheel is pants, nothing turns like a bm or merc!) leather seated and heated! 100% a dsg, can’t comment on the 7 speed but the 6 is fine with me, saying that I don’t think they do manual in a 7.5! I’d strongly consider a PP GTI or even a TCR. More toys for your money and abit rarer... the 300odd break is overrated, only really comes alive after stage 1. The gti would be more fun imo the haldex makes the car almost too perfect and as a result numb. You don’t feel as if your driving the car, your just in the driving seat pressing the go pedal and breaking, it’s like your playing a computer game pressing the R1 and L1 buttons! For me this isn’t a issue It’s my daily, I need something same and practical and abit Leary when some kid fancy his luck at the lights lol

Thanks. Dumb question: are DCC and adaptive suspension the same thing? I'm assuming so.

Mine (a 7R manual) has all of this (though only a rear parking cam; not sure whether VW does more than that). I wouldn't get rid of any of those options. In particular I wanted leather, and don't regret having waited for the right car to get that.

One thing I wish I had but don't is a heated windscreen. VW call it a climate screen for some inexplicable reason.

The only downsides I've found to owning one are a rattle (internal) and a squeak (suspension?) from the rear offside that I can't track down and can't be bothered to get fixed; the engine note, which sounds either like a Suburu, a five cylinder engine, or a bit boring depending on my mood; I find the manual shift a bit notchy and something that could be tighter; the clutch pedal is far too light but maybe that's necessary these days; and that the whole package scores 9s across the board but never a 10 at anything. It's the best all rounder but the least exciting of the cars we own.

Thanks will take a look at that thread about the gearbox. I can definitely see the attraction of a manual 7.5 PP GTI, but sadly they dont do that as an estate. I think there may be some manual FWD Leon Cupra 300 estates around which might be worth a look.

Weirdly enough I find that throwing away the standard shocks and springs on most "performance" VAG products in favour of a decent set of coilovers from KW transformed the ride from an uncomfortable, crashy ride into smooth, compliant and yet infinitely chuckable. The downside is the cost of a set of KW V2 etc. Those and a set of Uniroyal Rainsports made an Octavia vRS a lovely machine to do miles in.

Crystal method yes dcc is adaptive suspension, has the addition of comfort mode! Living in the city it helps a lot. Makesure you get as many options as poss as it will hold its value better when you come to sell. Manual, non leather, non sat nav (just because it has a screen doesn’t mean Nav option is on it, non dcc, non dyna audio, non camera, 18inch wheels and a undesirable colour like red Will be bottom of the pack I’m afraid. I think the heated windscreen is in winter pack, is it not? Never really Completed understood what winter pack has lol I might even have it but I don’t know.

I've recently bought a 7.5 GTi and it seems to have this issue - it's strange because I had a 7.5 GTD before and that didn't do it. I'm pretty sure my car doesn't have the lane departure system though - how would I tell?
