registering an imported car
Discussion
I got a car imported and I'm waiting for the forms from the dvla so i can register and tax it, but i was wondering do they just give me a random registration? if i buy a private plate, can I ask them to apply that to the car? so that this will be the first registration the car has?
I hope that makes sense
one more thing...
I am filling out the V355/5 form for the registration, but from that i understand the car needs an MOT and Insurance before it can be registered.
I have looked at the cost of Chassis (VIN) insurance and it's double the amount in comparison to if it had plates
any idea, how to avoid paying out so much ? can i get temp chassis insurance ?

I had no issues with Adrian Flux or Admiral insuring on the chassis number, price was the same every time.
However, I dont think its actually required. I always have it but Im sure its not a requirement anymore. Its for Northern Ireland only.
The MOT is of course, thats done on the Chassis number

The DVLA will issue an age related plate and send you the V5 in a week or two, however you can find out the reg number the moment it's registered rather than waiting for the V5, by calling them daily or by putting the VIN in on the online vehicle checker. The private plate can then be transferred onto the car online and it is immediate, the moment you hit return the number is on the car, there's no delay. You could use the private registration number with the insurer from the start, as long as there's no doubt that they know it's pending registration.
Yes, I had 30 days to give them the registration number, but as it was a known number that I had on retention they had the number from the start anyway. Notification was really just confirming that it was now registered and giving them the date of registration. I'm with Adrian Flux, who were so easy going and competent that I placed my campervan cover with them too.
