Dad was rabbiting on at the weekend how he couldn't find his ideal spec Porsche for sale...

a 993 C4, with a targa roof (he doesn't mind manual or tiptronic, but loves 4WD after his Audi quattro)

Sure enough, a quick scan in the classifieds found plenty of Targas, and plenty of C4s. But no C4 Targas. Do they exist?

Cheers

No. They were all 2WD.

The reason being is the extra weight of the roof system, together with the weight of the 4WD system would have made it notably slower than the rest of the range.

Look out for creaking roofs.

Side note: Targas are built the same as cabrios but a different roof is put on.

Yup, having seen one up close I agree with Daz about the roof. Very strange, it's like a cab with a hard top but obviously with the sliding glass section.

What's the handling like on them?

Ok cos they have a rigid roof or dodgy cos they're a miss-mash of cab and coupe?

I dont know why Porsche built the 993 targa on the Cabriolet platform, but I guess there is more chasis flex than the coupe (but less than the Cabriolet). I doubt this was a concern for them as the Cab/Targa was targeted at a different kind of buyer.

The 996 Targa is based on the Coupe not the Cabriolet...

964 C4 coupés were already slower than 944S2...
(demonstrated in Le Mans during a Porsche meeting in May)
