Hi folks,

I have a 1989 Golf Mk 2 GTi Campaign. I would like to retrofit some Power Steering or I won't get the wife to drive it. (I'm hearing voices saying why's that a problem) I'm trying to convince her she should be using it around the village to keep it mobile and avoid me selling it for something less interesting.

I'm guessing I'll need the obvious - Power Steering Rack, Power Steering Pump and Hoses?

Is there anyone out there that has done this or knows how it's done and the full list of parts (or mods) that's required.

Thanks in advance!

You can get electric power steering conversions for quite a lot of the older classic cars, maybe worth contacting a company that do them, see if they do one for your car.

As above there is a Vauxhall corsa electric steering conversion that is available for the mk2, there is a guide on club gti.

If you want to use a factory mk2 setup you will need..

The steering rack plus track rod ends

Pas pump

The 2 piece Bracket that fits to the block to support the Pas pump which lives under the waterpump. Depending on the age of your engine block some will need a hole on the back end of the block tapped to accept a bolt.

A pas specific drive belt

The pas hydraulic lines

The pas fluid bottle - available new.

The bracket to attach the pas fluid bottle to the passenger side chassis leg, holes should be present

New rubber mounts for the rack to subframe.

The power steering spec universal joint and the rubber boot that fits over the UJ into the engine bay.

I think that's it.

just to add, if you are looking at going down the electric power steering route, have a chat with "CRAZY QUIFF" via the MK2 golf owners website , he may even have his own site as he is also a VW breaker but he has developed a kit which uses a Corsa C pump an fitting gear plus a magic box to integrate the wiring.

just another thought

your car being a Campaign will make it a 1988 which is a bit of a crossover year where there are a few subtle differences between early 1983-1987, 88/89 an "90 spec" 1989 onward universal joints . This means if you get a power steering rack from a post 89 car you need a post 89 specific universal joint for your steering column plus the rubber gaiter. If you have a pre 89 setup the UJ and rubber gaiter are narrower in diameter so you cannot mix an match them.

You can also use the steering racks an hoses from mk3 Golfs, Corrados & the Seat Toledo/Cordobas to, you just have to make sure you use a post 89 mk2 Universal joint and depending if the donor vehicle was a wide track variant (GTI 16v +VR6) you need mk2 golf PAS track rod ends.
