£30k speeches, eh Cherie?

As claimed by the Beeb, in the penultimate paragraph of this unrelated story.
It's nice to know that the leadership of this country, whilst it gleefully fleeces feverishly, every subject that can be bothered to toil - out of their hard earned gains - so liberally indulges in the opportunities to feather their own, not insubstantial nest at our expense.
If Cherie is to receive several tens of thousands of pounds for spouting some inane postulate, will she be paying her own way during this little trip?
I rather think not.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not naive enough to think politicos [i]won't[/i] forever park their snouts troughwards, it's quite understandable: it's just that I do rather wish they'd afford the rest of us the same ability to earn [b]and[/b] then retain.

This is about par for the course with the Champagne Socialists that run the country. Even if they get caught out and there is uproar and they are forced to resign they are still brass necked enough to come back after a short holiday. Just look at Mandleson and Blunkett. It is unbelievable to me that they can brazenly get away with this.

Don't forget Thatcher made millions on the lecturing circuit after her ousting - including over a million dollars for one lecture alone in the US IIRC.
I don't see a great problem with this - it has always gone on, and provided it doesn't compromise the country in any way then fair enough.

But this is our PM's wife, not the PM and she appears to be getting the trip out to the states for free (i.e. paid for by the taxpayer) by combining it with an official visit by the PM.
Its just wrong on so many levels its unbelievable.

It doesn't compromise the country but it is using your priveliged position to make £££ which is the problem.
The Labour party is unable to understand that whilst they are in power - it is not an opportunity to line their own pockets. They will get plenty of time for that when they retire.
Lady Thatcher was not in a priveliged position when she made her money as she was no longer in power.

I think you will find that she is making her own travel arrangements. So no need to worry about paying the state funding her trip.
Beyond that I can’t see a problem. She is not an elected member of parliament or even an appointed representative of the government.
Personally I wouldn’t pay a penny to hear her speak. If others want to cough up, then more fool them

She came over here last year to stay at the governers mansion. (45 acres, 18-odd bedrooms). Baring in mind the going rate for land is about $2M an acre and most HOTELS charge a min of $300 a night you can imagine the governers house is pretty bloody special...

The speech for which she earned £30k was for a cancer charity and the fee was apparently donated by Jaguar, who sponsored the event.
I have 2 problems with this:
1) As previous Government figures and spouses have done, i think this sort of speech earning should be restricted until after they have left office.
2) if they're trying to tell us how 'good' a person Cherie Blair is, why didn't she do the speech for free?
Tempting though the idea of 10% of annual income must be for a night's work, the Blairs' combined income is not exactly low.

Doesn't bother me. We're the suckers who voted her husband in, and being a famous person I think she has every right to exploit that fame in any way she sees fit. Heck if I was Cherie I certainly wouldn't turn down a £30k speaking engagement (which by the way is the standard rate for individuals of her broadsheet-worthiness) on altruistic or ethical grounds.
