Complete career change?

Anyone done this?

For example, you are an IT consutant and want to be a doctor, or a Web designer and want to be an Architect.

Maybe it's reading all those children's books..."When I grow up I want to be a..."

Just wondered if anybody has done this.

I'm an IT bloke, considering being anything else TBH

Saw a track day company looking for a mechanic, which would be nice but it wouldn't pay the mortgage

I was a civil servant in 2001, studied for 3 years and became an IFA in 2004, that was quite a radical change of direction for me...but then I detested the utter stupidity of the civil service attempt at management so I had to go to save my sanity

I'd like to get out of engineering. I like the job but the pay and prospects are depressing. Does anyone know what ex engineers do??

Thats my biggest problem, I absolutely detest my current job but as its city based there are 2 problems. Firstly its a career of which all my experience is based around 1 industry (fund management - I'm a supervisor in the back office operations area), in the city, where I hate working.
Secondly, I earn a fairly decent wage and acnnot afford to take much of a paycut - 5-6k at most.

TBH I'd love to go the same line as Minimax but don't have a lot of spare cash to pay for the exams and can't afford the salary drop to take a trainee IFA position. It's also very hard to find a position whereby even if you had the correct qualifications they'd take you on with a decent salary but no experience.

I worked at a bodyshop in Peterborough as an estimator.

I decided it wasn't for me so I quit, went to Uni for 5 years (had to do an access course as I don't have A-Levels), did a work placement, further on the job training and am now a Chartered Surveyor working in the City!

Hard work, and I'm only just getting back up to the level of salary I was on back at my old job, but it can be done - although I had the full support of my parents who I couldn't have done it without.

One mate who left IT to go to Africa for Unicef.

An ex-colleague who's life was saved by a paramedic, is now training to be a paramedic.

Another who jacked IT in to open a dive school in Thailand.

And I'll be next

some companies will snap you up with the qualifications but no experience. as it happens I had 3 years at northern rock while I was a student but nonetheless, you can walk into these jobs easily if you know the right people - ie me

at least 3 of the 16 on our training course had absolutely no financial services experience at all!

the grass certainly was greener for me, my professional life is immeasurably better, many X income, many X responsibility, many X job satisfaction, oh, and my own office which was all I ever really wanted anyway

Afraid so

I started out (after uni) working in a classic car repair shop, but it didn't pay enough and the conditions weren't great. So I moved into IT, went up the corporate ladder a bit. Can't see myself getting any higher and now I'm bored

I've done a bit of property development on the side which is good fun but I'd imagine that once you've learn the ropes it's going to be really dull

I keep thinking about something automotive, but finding something that will challenge me physically and mentaly, that will sustain interest and pay OK is tricky

Maybe I just bore easily

I wonder how many people actually do jobs that they have an interest in. There are very few people on here, relatively speaking, who are in the motor trade.

I presume if they are in the trade and on here, they must be pretty happy.
