Hi,

Looking at getting into car racing, starting with doing my ARDS and then entering a Tin Top series.

However, had a thought. Does participating in the sport affect my current life insurance policy?

Anyone have any experience to know if its all fine or could be an issue?

Thanks

You will probably have to tell them.

I recently applied for critical illness/ injury insurance and motorsport was excluded.

But, as a MUK licence holder you do get insurance cover, inc injury, whilst you are on authorised events through JLT. Cant remember the extent of cover. I think this has just been extended to cover 5 track days per year but dont know how this is managed.
Check the MUK website.

I've just started a life insurance policy and they asked about motor sports but didn't seem fussed when I said I race saloon cars in the UK and occasionally Europe.

Avoid Sports Financial would be my advice ...

I checked with my life insurance providers and they confirmed that the only exclusion was flying a private plane / helicopter.

Might be worth checking with your job as well. Company I worked for took out life insurance on my behalf when I was meant to be working in Columbia (Medellin in the 90’s, eek). Motorsport a specific exclusion (skydiving as well if I remember rightly) and also excluded me from the company’s normal ‘death in service’ benefits.

Certainly not the company I got a quote off. I was really surprised, but racing's not on their list of dangerous sports. At the time I was racing an old school spaceframe single seater, which is horrendously dangerous compared to the sports I do they were concerned about, like scuba diving. This is always going to individual though depending on the company you speak to.

I am with Standard Life. They said if I was a racing driver they wouldn't cover me, but if I started racing after the inception of the policy they would not worry.

I declared it and was then asked to give all sorts of details on number of events, type of cars, racing in the UK and abroad etc. It barely made any difference to my premium. smile

This is my experience too - different company but same opinion.

I have had various life insurance policies over the years and always been open about racing. The response I have always had is that I wouldn't be covered if the worst happened while on track. Other than that on track, I was covered

I’m with Aviva - only an issue if I was a “professional racing driver”.

Competing in club events at the weekend is fine, although they did want details.
