Prompted by going to Greggs and seeing a mince pie I had to have it, I’ve decided since I eat a lot of them over the Christmas period I’m going to rank them

Size (shouldn’t be too big so I can have 3)
Pastry ( moist but crumbly and nice and thick)
Toppings (a light dusting of sugar, extra points if it’s in a shape)
Filling (should be plenty of mixed fruit and not too much juice )
Texture (the fruit should be firm and not soggy but not hard either)
Cost (single ones, will divide a box cost per pie)

Last years winner was obliviously the M&S one in the gold box

First up

Greggs

Size - a bit big for my liking, would be better if it was a bit deeper and less flat 6/10
Pastry - typical Greggs pastry, good but seems to be lacking something, so it crumbled but in large chunks, good for keeping crumbs out the car but not the best for enjoyment 6/10
Toppings- what tastes like granulated sugar, not what it should be 4/10
Filling - not sparse but not full of fruit, a bit too much juice for me, not that much flavour more of a hint of mince pie. 6/10
Texture - fruits a bit soggy and maybe a bit slimy, 5/10
Cost - at £1.10, for quite a big one, I would say good value and it suits the Greg’s range for what it is. Not fancy and lacking depth but still worth it 7/10

Overall, enjoyable and would have again, goes well with their coffee and I do love a Greggs for being so many of them about

6/10

Feel free to join in, from poor to amazing

Love a mince pie and having seen them in the shops was wondering when I could start eating them. Is this thread for purist mince pies only or is the fancy stuff allowed like ones topped with icing etc biggrin

Anything! Although I would deduct points if I was given a iced one or god forbid one made with puff pastry

The best ones are the black cherry and chocolate ones that Aldi were doing last year.

Haven't seen them on sale yet.

The ones currently available aren't as nice, quite powdery.

That sounds like a butchered mince pie to me!

As for the Costa ones. They are very tasty, more of a bakewel base too.

Yes it’s the 7th November, when is it acceptable to have a mince pie? December 1st?

I made some puff pastry mince pies a month ago to use up the left over pastry from a chicken pie.
I just bought some new jars of mincemeat to make this years supply. Probably bake them next week. About 80 should be sufficient.

First choice is iced mince pies from M&S, sainsbury's iced mince pies second choice.

A mince pie lacking icing is just all kinds of wrong, the one pictured by the Op is a claggy abomination.

I like the Morrisons baked in store ones or their "Best" ones. Asda Extra Special ones are good too.

That's wrong, very wrong!!

Should only be eating cheese with Christmas cake (on Boxing Day, obs) and white stilton with cranberries is an excellent choice, IMO.

I do love a mince pie. I was only asking today if it was too early. Cracking idea for a thread and a wonderful first review.

Personally I'm fairly partial to an iced pie. Don't think I had one last year. Do Kipling still do one with custard in it?

Iced ones are great.
I think the Kipling custard ones are more a trifle cake, unless Im missing what sounds like an awesome mince pie

Haha funny you say that, I am actually on the keto diet!
Il add that to the list where I can

The Greggs one was 37g, which while not under my usual 25 still comes in under the 50g-100g I try to stick to to maintain my weight

best I’ve had in my life are some handmade ones from a sandwich shop in Birmingham City Centre. They’re an inch thick with mincemeat and the pastry is to die for.
They come in boxes of 30 iirc. A chap I used to work with, his mrs worked in the shop so he brought them in.
Infinitely better than any supermarket one I’ve ever had.
I’ll text him tomorrow and get the name of the shop.

Costco ones. Huge topped with a sponge topping rather than pasty.

Never been a fan of mince pies until last year.

Lidl mini mince pies - perfect ratio of mincemeat pastry.

Brandy butter with mine please.
