My fiancé wants to go rally driving so I was thinking about buying a Mitsubishi EVO IV as you can get them cheap (so I would b eless pissed off if it crashed/rolled over etc). Is this a good idea as you can pick cars up where other people have spent a lot of cash on upgrades etc already?

I would have thought that an Evo (of any year) would be a bit in at the deep end. I would want to learn some real skills in something more basic.

Plenty of other cars out there that would do

ahhh rallying, think of a budget, then double it....

there are plenty of beginners cars in motorsport news every week, novas, 205s and suchlike are perhaps best for those new to the sport. If you want some rear wheel drive action, try finding an escort or a manta. Buy a pre-prepped car too, one with a log book etc, it will save time and ££££££s

EVOs are best left to those who know what they are doing. No offence but its like wanting to be a racing driver and buying Alonso's Renault....

I second the above statements about buying something cheap and cheerful at first. A Nova, Astra, 205 or something like. These are cheap to buy (ready prepped and logbooked), cheap to run and cheap to repair (from the local scrappy!). We just upgraded from an Astra to an Impreza this year and it has been a sorely trying (not to mention expensive) experience getting the damn thing to the end of a rally, let's face it, EVOs and Imprezas are your thoroughbred rally cars, but what's needed is reliability aswell, a well prepared front wheel drive car will beat these things on this front every time. When getting into the sport, it's getting the hang of things and getting some results under your belt that matters, fine upgrade later, if you feel the need, but if you get bitten by the bug then there are far worse places than the BTRDA Silkolene 1400 championship to run in. We did it last year and enjoyed (almost) every minute. Very competitive, Very Friendly. There's no point in shelling out loadsa ££££s to find that you don't enjoy it.

When I'm dreaming I usually take a peek here:

And if you Google for Rally cars for sale it brings up a pretty good selection of other pages.
