Hi All

I’m having issues registering a UK RHD car in France. I bought a used BMW M5 from a dealer in the UK and currently live in Paris on a special residence permit.

The issue I have is that the bureaucrats are insisting that I fill in a Cerfa 15776*01 certificate of transfer form. Which is nonsense as the form is meant for a car/purchase sale in France and technically some of the boxes can’t be filled in. The other issue is that it requires the dealer in UK to fill it in - which is an issue as the deal is well and truly done.

Technically I understand that I only need a copy of the invoice from the car dealer (which I have provided) and the UK registration - V5C, which I also have provided. The V5C might also be questioned I’ve been told as it’s not in my name (it’s in the old owner’s name who traded the car into the dealer) and the DVLA no longer issues export certificates.

Has anyone got any experience with such a situation? Alternatively, are there any registration services or lawyers in Paris that could assist me with this?

I have all other necessary documents such as the Certificate of Conformity and this is the last step. I also am exempt from the Control Technique and registration taxes as I’m getting the car put on diplomatic plates as I work at an Embassy.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

First, best and easiest thing is get the car registered to you on a uk log book with a uk address. Use a family member for this if you don't now have an address. It should then be plain sailing.

A mate had the same problem importing a car from Holland - took ages and lots of banging his head against the wall and he's French!

I took the same route suggested by Magooagain above - simple and straightforward, just one thing, is it older than 6 months old and more than 3000km on the clock, otherwise you could be hit for import taxes.

Thanks for the responses.

Yes, the uk address is an option I’ve considered.

Not that easy unfortunately even with a relatives address as the DVLA send me an email that I require confirmation of address (one from the list below):

  • utility bill within the last 3 months e.g. gas, electricity water, landline telephone (valid within the last 3 months)
  • bank/building society statement ( valid within the last 3 months)
  • medical card
  • council tax bill for current year
Will see how I go. Very frustrating.

Have you checked if the embassy or foreign office have an hr or privileges and immunities group that helps out with this? I'm a different country and organisation to you but similar status. I just gave my V5 and the invoice from when I bought the car to our P&I people and got my Dutch registration details through a couple of weeks later.

Hi
Yes, it’s in the hands of the Embassy people.
The different country might have a significant impact on the speed outcome.
My experience with French bureaucracy and paperwork in unprecedented!

Hello

I'am French and I have experience in buying and register car from europe and UK.

I you provided an invoice you should not fill Cerfa 15776*01
Your invoice might miss some informations, so it's why they ask cerfa
Nevertheless the invoice should be reedited and still no cerfa required
OR just fill the cerfa with the dealer, it can be another solution and do not worry about leaving some boxes empty, just do your best.

I have learn that sometimes it's better to give stupid bureaucrats what they want...

I know it's been 2 months now and you might be fine by now but might be usefull for others.

If someone need help to register, let me know.

I love UK !

Howdy

All registered and on the road now! The dealer in the UK helped to fill in the form requested by the bureaucrats. As per the last reply, it’s sometimes better to give in and not fight even if it doesn’t make sense.
