A wedding challenge

Ok, so I am getting married on the 31st May next year. I love my music, leaning towards 70’s/80’s British indie, pub rock etc., as well as 90’s/noughties American indie, plus classic 60’s and 70’s, as well as Motown.

The mrs likes modern pop, Taylor Swift etc (yes, I’m sure I’m making the right decision). Wedding venue provides a DJ etc, you can choose his music or produce a playlist.

Recommendations (based in the above tastes) for first dance and for the rest of it? I’m thinking ‘do you realise’ by the flaming lips for the first dance...

Every suggestion gets a virtual pint.

Many options from Semisonic, nothing too heavy or distracting, but poignant. Choose your speed from Secret Smile to Chemistry and all sorts in between. Dan Wilson has a nice touch.

No parrot, there’s lovely bits and weird bits, but the sentiment is there, just making the most of a lovely thing before it inevitably ends (sorry, ex goth!)

I made this playlist for my wedding, during the food bit. I like heavy music, but was aware I needed to keep it "user friendly" so I stuck a ton of songs into this and put it on shuffle.

I left the evening up to the DJ, but with some caveat such as no "move" songs, no really modern pop, no take that or similar. Any good DJ should get a list of likes/dislikes and build a playlist around that. We also had to provide 10/20 favourite songs each that he would try and fit in if suitable. Ours also planned a "fake" ending around half 10, where he was due to move into heavier music, unfortunately/fortunately it was really warm for our wedding and people spent most of the evening outside and not dancing, so I cancelled this and just asked him to play anything to get people up and dancing.

I heard this the other night. It's Taylor Swift covering Phil Collins and thought it would have made a great first dance song, but I've not looked into the meaning too much

We had a "real" DJ do a Mash-up of ACDCs "Thunderstruck" and Paddy Reilly's "After all these years". Went absolutely tits up but seeing as the first dance was many hours after the bar had opened I don't think anyone cared.

Beside, more people were scared of this horse going around biting them.

That's a very flexible back you have there with all that leaning. Your wife to be will be happy on the matrimonial bed I think.

I'd just go the traditional route for the first dance. It is also slow enough that you can both shuffle along and still seem still in time

You can then get funky when all the other people get in the dance floor

And the lyrics are great, you can whisper it in her ear as you have the first intimate moment of the day. This will be the first time you get to be just you two. Make the most of it, the music should compliment that.

We have totally opposite music tastes.

We chose the first dance song and gave a few of our favourites to the DJ in advance

BUT also asked guests in advance to pick a personal favourite track compiled a list and gave that to the DJ.

Result was everybody enjoying a varied selection of music and not being aubjected to the Djs favourites / typical corny wedding music

Absolutely love that idea, and we will definitely do it (albeit hoping no mickey takers choose Napalm Death... although...)

On another point, do you just give the DJ a list of tracks and he gets them off Spotify, or does he/she expect a mix CD or what?
