P47 Thunderbolt over Cheshire today.

Just come back from walking the dogs near Nantwich and I'm convinced a P47 flew northwest overhead.

We get several different planes fly over each day (the vast majority are light aircraft that I wouldn't know one from the other) or military helicopters from Shawbury, but what made me look up was the noise - it sounded so much more powerful.

I looked up to see what I'm sure was a silver Thunderbolt with I think D Day stripes.

By the time I got my camera out to get a photo, it was way in the distance.

It's UK based so it's most probably the one the OP saw In an earlier life, it used to be based at Duxford.

I've always liked the look of these:

1) Take one large engine.

2) Attach wings, a chair and guns.

3) Go and destroy anything in your way.

I think you'll find that Nellie B is based at Duxford for the majority of the time.

It was meant to be part of a 4-ship display at Bournemouth Air Festival, but the formation flew with the Grace Spitfire subbed in for the P-47, displaying a Buchon, P-51, a Mk.V Spitfire, and the Mk.IX Grace two-seater for today's show.

I presumed that the P-47 had gone u/s and couldn't display, so it's disappointing to see that it was just off elsewhere. But that'll teach me to go on an earlier day (four-day show) and not leave it until the last minute to go up for the display.

It got large not so much because of the engine but because they wanted to fit a large turbocharger and they had to make the fuselage very deep to accommodate the ducting.
