Hello all,

As above. I have put two cans of Holts air con cleaner through the car's system. One behind the driver's seat, as per instructions, and when that didn't work, the second can went up the cavity where the cabin air filter sits (having removed it first).

It hasn't made any difference. It still smells like fish/old ladies who've wet themselves.

No wet carpets so I doubt the drains are blocked, but if anyone has any suggestions as to how to cure the smell I'd be very grateful.

I had this with a focus, it was water in the screen wash that smelt and not the air conditioning..worth checking

1) change the cabin filter (easy and cheap. Not sure if done before?
2) spray cabin filter with loads of febreeze
3) have new fresh air con gas done
4) you can have the car "ozoned" by a detailer for around 60 quid
5) may be worth taking seats out and giving the carpets and the seats a good scrub wirh some heavy duty cleaners incase someone had let themselves go
6) also worth scrubbing the headliner.
7) check the air intake vents under the windscreen for cabin air.

The suggestion about washer fluid is also valid
Had a hire car recently legitimately smelt of vomit whe you used the washer jets.

I'm honoured that your first ever post in five months' membership was to reply to my query!

It's definitely the aircon as opposed to the screen wash as the smell hits you when you turn it on.

1 - done. Carbon coated Mann filter. It still whiffs.
2 - good suggestion. Will try that.
3 - the gas is fine and there are no leaks in the system.
4 - freshly detailed. Still stinks!
5 - neither I nor anyone who has been in the car has shat themselves
6 - confused
7 - good suggestion. Will try that.

Ozone is designed to kill the smells.
When you say detailed do you mean scrubbed for a few hours at home , a quick wash by the local Tesco? or was the car fully fogged using an Ozone machine?

It does make a difference (I used to do it on occasion as part of an old job).

Headliner was just because a lot of smells can linger there too

One thing I use at home in my own cars is the spray dettol disinfectant.
Air con on recirc, max, and empty half a can into the passenger and driver footwell.

Most of the smell is going to be bacteria build up usually it's moisture in the sytem from running it constantly or not enough (such fickle things!)

Not sure what it's like on a properly stinky motor but it gets rid of our cheesy feet smell nicely biggrinbiggrin

Good luck! Very frustrating niggle to have.
