I drive through Prestwich, Manchester a lot, which is predominantly a Hasidic Jewish community.

One thing I always notice is the very high number of Toyota Previas (Estimas) within such a small area. I've never seen so many cars of the same model outside of car shows. In fact I haven't seen a Toyota Estima on the road for years outside of Prestwich. Today I did my usual route and counted no less than 25 Estimas on a road which was a mile long at most!

Does anyone know why this is? Are there any Jewish PHers who care to explain?

From what I can gather having driven through Prestwich a couple of times is that they tend to have big families.

It seems so from a quick Google. The one I was behind today was badged up as an Estima.

Previous are sold in Japan as Estimas (so basically a grey import).

I cant think of any 8 seat MPVs as reliable as the Previa and yes, due to large families.

I live in Prestwich.

Estima Central !! A lot of them badly driven and maintained.
The Police have a crack down once in a while. Bald Tyres, missing Lights, no MOT, etc.

There's loads in Small Heath in Birmingham too.

On a single 1/4 mile stretch on my commute to my old workplace I'd easily see 5-6 parked up, and more down the side streets.

Never seen so many in one place, then again I've never been to Prestwich!

I’ve spent a lot of time in Prestwich .. try driving past the schools at Sedgely Park at drop/pick times .. it’s mental

Tbf I used to work round Stamford Hill in North London at it was exactly the same

Lots of very big old cars being driven very badly

For stereotypical reasons that will probably get you into bother if you call them out!

Reliable, cheap, big families. Not hard to answer really. What else is there?

Certain cars appeal to certain demographical groups who reside in close knit communities hence why you'll find a lot of suchlike cars in these kind of areas.

Nothing stereotypical, but Jewish communities don’t buy German cars, hence the large number of Volvos around golders green in London. The Estima is a big car with lots of space, is very reliable and is cheap to run. What’s not to like.

If they're originally JDM cars, maybe there's an importer in the area? There's a place near me which seems to import and sell Mitsuoka cars (like the Micra-based Mk 2 Jag looking thing) and I see quite a few driving round here, but I've never seen one anywhere else.

I may have spelled Mitsuoka completely wrong.

Not German. A non-trivial consideration for this particular community.

I thought Estima was a variety of potato.
