I'm very bored so did some digging.
In March 2000, it was estimated that there were around 570 million email boxes worldwide, therefore an estimate of around 500 billion messages for the year 2000.

That has presumably increased 10s or even 100s of times in the last 5 years.
So yes, you would be fairly well off.
