Having just read the headline from yesterday motoring news, I was chatting to my boss (dosen't know a lot about cars) about the sheer feat of the Caterham beating the McLarens record

It dawned on me just how amazing the feat was. My boss has just brought a new Vauxhall Astra (family man) and I put it to him that in the time that he has got to sixty, the caterham has been to 100 and back

When you really think about it, it is mad...I feel that many of us take for granted our five second 0-60 times

Does anyone have any tales (or even video clips) of the forces and speeds involved?

Ive got a std Tuscan which I normaly drie quite hard. I was using a 1.4 golf for a few days and its inability to increase speed at 50ish was almost scary.

This is featured in this months Autocar mag. TVR Tamora was 15.2sec (0-30 in 1.9, 0-60 in 4.3, 0-100 in 9.8 and 100-0 in 4.99 plus reaction times).

Just to compare the Pagani Zonda C12 did it in 11.84 sec and Eddie Irvine's Jaguar R3 Formula One car did it in 5.9sec - less than half the time of the Pagani Zonda

Are you including time he took to do his hair, look to see who was looking at him, and check his bank balance? I hope he goes broke, before he braked using hids brakes.

I actually think the 0-100-0mph time of the McLaren F1 LM isn't as good as it could be. The standard F1 does 0-60mph in 3.2s and 0-100mph in 6.3s. 100-0mph should be 4.5s or less. Add in a typical reaction time on these tests of 0.5s (though often it is 0.3s or less) and that makes 11.3s - that's for a standard F1 being conservative with reaction times and braking figures. In fact it could probably break the 11s barrier on a near-perfect run.

The LM is more powerful and lighter than the standard F1. The magazine that did the test (think it was Car) also did comparison (F1 vs F1 LM) figures for in-gear acceleration etc. and the LM destroyed the F1 - I remember being in awe! So, it's not unreasonable to expect it to be able to beat the standard F1 0-100-0mph - even bearing in mind that getting the power down was proving tricky, expecting a couple of tenths better is not unreasonable.

So after all that, I reckon the LM could potentially do a 0-100-0mph run in 10.8s or thereabouts.

The R500 is still seriously f@cking awesome though. But nothing comes close to the F1 car - 0-100-0mph in roughly the same time an Elise will do 0-60mph!!!
