2016 Golf GTI (220) Tank Range
Discussion
Hi,
I recently bought a 2016 Golf GTI (220). I was torn between the GTD/GTI/R and opted for the GTI. I'm pretty good at squeezing high MPG out of my cars, especially on motorway runs. Just the usual keeping a constant speed, avoiding gassing it, sensible cruise speed etc.
Given this, what should I expect from a full tank on a long motorway run with this car? 500 ish perhaps?
Any other tightwads out there got any numbers?
Also, what might I get from a GTD using the same criteria?
cheers

Not excatly comparing apples with apples but have driven a 2011 GTI from Edinburgh to Cardiff I could see 500 miles being possible based on what you're saying there.I'm pretty good at squeezing high MPG out of my cars, especially on motorway runs. Not exactly apples to apples, but I had the exact same engine in my 2016 Superb alongside the 6 speed DSG. I'd see about 420 miles to a tank (60 litres) with mostly town driving and nudging 500 with some runs thrown in. I averaged 33mpg with mostly town/city driving and would see 40 to 50mpg (boredom depending) on a run. You shouldn't fail to come close in a Golf.
Edit: They really do benefit from 99 RON btw. Stick it on Tesco Momentum or V-Power and leave it there. It will pay for itself, but it takes two or three tanks for the benefits to become fully apparent. One dose of 95 and you'll feel it straight away, and be back to square one.

Mt wife has a 2016 GTI with DSG box that she bought new. We drove from Kent to Scotland in June and averaged 49mpg on the way up and 47 on the way back. Just driving at normal speeds. Didn’t take any notice of how many miles per tank but for what it is it’s very good on fuel. Normally does about 35-38 mpg average per tank for day to day stuff which is normally short trips.
Pretty sure she will buy a Mk8 GTI when that’s out. The Mk7 GTI has been faultless over the 32000 miles it’s covered.

Cheers, much appreciated.
Came up to NE Scotland from Axminster on Saturday in the wife's C250 estate, 600 miles plus, still 250 left (averaging 60MPG). I'm wondering of I should have gone for a GTD as I struggle with a "low" tank range.

If range was your number one priority then yes the GTD would be better. I was entertaining the idea of a GTD so I have done some rough working out. I would imagine high 30s mpg at best in the GTI for mixed driving. So a tank range of 420ish miles. Probably 450ish if just on motorway. The GTD I think you would be able to get over 500 miles without too much difficulty. Pretty much this but with a manual PP & mixed driving but the odd little wobble on reliability.Pretty sure she will buy a Mk8 GTI when that’s out. The Mk7 GTI has been faultless over the 32000 miles it’s covered.
Last long run I did would have been @ 550 miles on a full tank and day to day is comfortably over 400 in some less than perfect conditions.
I likely wouldn't buy a Mk8, though not out of dislike or bad experience. I have no real complaints, just want something different (probably with more than a 4). I had a much more mundane Mk6 for a while and hated it, but the 7 seems to be the all-rounder it is supposed to be (so, I guess dull to many).
I average 33 MPG and get about 350 before the fuel light comes on (normal 95 RON, manual 230PS). I don't drive like an idiot but do enjoy the odd B road.
Has jumped to an average of 37 lately with summer holiday traffic.
Motorway stuff being a good boy I've seen up to 45 on the trip average so you probably could do 450 on a tank without major effort or boringness.
