Golf MK6 GT TDI - with the "Diesel Gate" remap
Discussion
Hi,
I have a 2009 Golf MK6 2.0 GT TDI, manual.
However I noticed after buying the car in the service manual , the previous owner had taken the car in for the Diesel Gate emissions re map done.
Comparing to my last car (MK5 GT TDI), it is so much less punchy at lower RPM, also MPG is lower (MK5 was ave 55, MK6 44)
I have learned that the CR engine less punchy than the PD in the MK5, but wondering if the re map has made this gap worse?
Also the boost is so random, on hot days almost like no lower boost, and the car also sits above idle alot of time - DMF regen? But it does it about 50% all the time, often fan blowing after car is shut off.
Thinking of doing a quick REVO map, that will hopefully cancel the awful re map, and could give give better performance and economy?
Thanks
Fred

I've got the exact same car as yourself, and I agree after the emissions update was carried out the car felt so different in a bad way. Felt less punchy than before, and economy also took a hit. I've since had it remapped on a Dyno and is now running at 185bhp and 405nm of torque. Absolutely transformed the car, the low down torque is something else and it carries on pulling to around 4k revs which is amazing for a diesel. I can highly recommend Diesel Powered in Batley if you're local.
The revs sitting at 1k is usually a result of the DPF regenerating and frequent regens could indicate the DPF is maybe at end of its life with the Ash level being too high. What's mileage on the car ?

In the absence (so far) of any better help; my parents thought their 1.6 TDI Golf needed a lower gear to go up hills (at the same speed) post-remap, i.e. it wouldn't pull as high gears as before in the same circumstances.
I have a feeling they've effectively lowered the boost at low rpm, reducing torque. This would indeed make it feel slower and be thirstier (since the most efficient way to drive is low revs and lean on the torque). The purpose is I think that NOx is particularly produced under high-load, low-rpm conditions when the car would previously dump a load of fuel in and get the turbo spinning up.

I watched a long Youtube video on this which explained the multitude of emissions systems that they deliberately disabled in order to increase power and reduce fuel consumption.
The owners loved the resulting perfomace and economy but unfortunately those living in cities bore the brunt of it as NOx and particulates skyrocketed as a result.
Wen you turn the EGR's back on, make the DPF work properly, etc etc combustion temperatures drop, power drops and fuel consumption increases.
That's how the engine is actually meant to work (or at least how VW told the various government agencies that it worked). Before turning off all that pesky emissions stuff and pumping all that crap out into city air.
A mate of mine (not a petrol head) had his done and thought that VW had done something seriously wrong. I just told him that that's how a Euro 5 diesel performs when the emissions technology is actually switched on.

I've not heard a single good thing about it which is why we kept our A1 1.6 TDI well away.
They promise not to reduce power, but that'll be peak power it's the low down torque you lose.
Do yourself a favour and get a remap from somewhere reputable. On the plus side may be getting some compo because of it.

- Sad compo face with arms crossed*
I did not have my 2012 Skoda Octavia vRS CR DSG mod'd. Two friend had an Audi A6 & a A4 Avant done & regretted it. In both cases resulted in noisier & lumpy tick-over, reduced low speed torque & increased fuel consumption. A4 sold within 6 months but A6 had to be kept for longer as it was a company car.
My vRS was only traded in for a petrol Leon a couple of months ago.

Thanks, I might take it to Dark side Developments to have it re mapped, rather than just plugging in a REVO map.
And will ask to go on the rolling road before they do any work, will be interesting to see, think my 140 model, from factory was actually 138hp, and around 220 ft lb torque
But yeah it is dreadful to drive, compared to my MK5, in hot weather it so poor at lower RPM, it feels like variable veins on the turbo are not working, only getting boost at higher RPM

Yes, 140PS equates to 138bhp. I think the torque figure is the same as the 170PS which is 236 ft.lbAnd will ask to go on the rolling road before they do any work, will be interesting to see, think my 140 model, from factory was actually 138hp, and around 220 ft lb torque

Thanks, my car has done 100k, just clicked over.
Is this too high to remap? I have looked after it very well, only used Shell Optimax, never rev'd high from cold, and new oil and filter every 8k.
If I do remap, what might give out first - the turbo?
From my basic research from mapping a diesel is that, air flow is constant, so more fuel is added. Does a remap basically just add more fuel? Raising the torque limiter.
Also does a remap adjust the turbo, as it is controlled mechanically, though the accuator, controlled with vacuum and the wastgate, working off exhaust manifold pressure.
I cannot see how a software update controls these more "mechanical" things, unless I am wrong on how the CR engine works.
Thanks
Fred

Not all remaps are equal. Darkside are top class. I've got someone who does mine, most are in the 180k mile plus category. Never had a bother with any VAG TDI remapped. Current PPD140 Passat remapped to 185bhp and 375nm or thereabouts. Better on juice and way more responsive.
Can't say I like a CR to drive as much as an equivalent power PD. Despite being faster, the smoothness means it doesn't feel as fast.
