Driver Training
Discussion
I've asked this before but, does anyone do any driver training days in the North West? (I know Andy Walsh is booked up, and down South, is there anyone else? Any specific Lotus ones, I need some skidpan time..? Also if the track is not wet, doesn't it eat your tyres in one day!?
Bogie, quoting a previous post of yours:
"from what Doug described of his incident, it was like he had a slide on one way, instinctively applied corrective lock, but then the car gripped before he'd unwound, so he ends up going the other way even quicker...I find this real hard to recover from in practice - you end up going one way then the other, sometimes over correcting each way and eventually spin...the only way around it I guess is either to become that well practised in your own car that you can sense everything instinctively and react accordingly....or not get yourself into that situation in the first place..Doug had driven 1000 miles in his car whilst running in - even with years of experience in other powerful RWD cars..they dont behave the same as mid engined lightweight one, so he would have had to be pretty lucky to save it in that scenario IMO - nothing that some time on a wet airfield wouldnt sort out...Im not saying that by just doing a day practising you will be able to save it every time in every circumstance...just that you will be upping the odds in your favour !....Ive lost count of the number of 'moments' Ive had on wet days, where if I had been new to the car I would have ended up in a ditch or something...luckily Id had a fair few days training, a few track days and 20K road miles under my belt before I hit the first winter in the Elise."
This happened to me the other day, corrective lock applied, gripped, goes other way, ended up fine though, pure luck. This is why I need some training...
regards
Rob

Chalk me up an someone else interested in driver training in the North West. Travelling down to North Weald just isn't going to happen for me due to work committments.
However, when I was last at the dealer dropping off my car for service, I mentioned this, and he indicated that a chap on the Exiges.com board was about to take his race driver instruction exam, and that it might be worth getting in touch with him. I made a note of his name in my Palm organizer, which then promptly broke
but I seem to recall his name is Russ somebody-or-other. The dealer didn't know what his 'net handle was, unfortunately.
When I get a few minutes later, I'll see if I can track him down. Anyone else is free to try in the meantime.
All I want is a bit of help with catching, holding and correcting slides. So far, I managed one huge tankslapper on the road, where the car slid, then gripped and flicked the tail out the opposite way. It was more by luck and the ABS than design/skill that I saved it and kept it pointing the right way. Then, when I was on a dealer trackday at Anglesey, I overcooked it a few times on a wet track - I could feel it going, but had really no idea how to catch and hold the slide. I suspect all the slides were saveable, but I don't think I was getting enough lock on quickly enough, and I was instinctively going for the brakes, thereby making things worse. this was the usual outcome...
