The drivers window on my wifes car squeaks when going up or down. I have tried silicone spray and washing up liquid on the horizontal seal without success, I have also polished the glass inside and out and waxed the windows inside and out.

The squeak starts from the very first movement of the glass, including the dip as the door is opened.

Next to no improvement, could it be the motor?

I never used washing up liquid on rubber seals, I suspect its not good.

Before you start dismantling, and risking any miss alignment try some of this.

I managed to cure all sorts of convertible seal problems with it, which every day silicon sprays didn't touch. You may need more than one application over a few days.

Otherwise take the door cards off and look at the channels and regulator.

Thanks for the post.

Spent a couple of hours on the problem yesterday. Used a table knife warpped in cotton and inserted it between the seal and glass, slid the knife along, huge amount of grit and dirt came out, tried again with a wet smooth microfibre and again loads of rubbish. Trained a fan jet hose pipe on the seal, again lots of grit.

95% of the squeak has gone. I had seen advice given elsewhere on the internet to use washing up liquid and also silicone sprays, there may be circumstances where these work but not this one.

I blame myself for having caused the problem, although I detail the car, two buckets, quality wash, good mitts, clay bar etc. I dont usually put any water on the side glass preferring to use glass cleaner and then glass polish. The car never gets really dirty to be honest and what I was doing seemed to be good enough, I think this has lead to a build up of grit in the seals below body level instead of having a wash through that you might have when you are washing the car using a hosepipe on the glass.

Going to give the car window another flush this week and see if I can get it to 100% perfect.

Thanks for the tip on the Amazon product, I have some Autoglym Vinyl and Rubber stuff, if that doesnt do the job I will try the Gummi product.

Thanks again for the helpful response.

To complete the story. I used a table knife to ease the seal away from the glass and spray some water and washing up liquid solution down the gap. The amount of grit and dirt that came out was immense. removed the drain plugs, they were damp but not as bad as I feared.

The noise reduced - on some days only.

Took it in to VW for a new seal, which they did, but the noise continued so a new regulator was needed, cost of repair was £380.
