Following on from the have you been poor thread..

Do you regard yourself as rich and why?

I guess it comes down to what makes you tick, from my point of view I’m rich - thought I have only just come to see it like that. I'm about to finish uni, I’m in a stable relationship with someone I love (yer ok, I know I’m young (well 22), but it works really well for both of us) I get on phenomenally well with my parents who live sensibly close, I have a car (all be it not one I want!) yet I have no money.

I have spent a long time debating what I want to do, I have been working for a small local company during uni and I enjoy the work. They have offered me a job, but it pays less than other offers; it is all they can afford. I'm going to take it; they are a really nice bunch the work/life balance is good with one day a week working from home. Eventually this might pay off as the employees how a 40% share in the company which when sold will be divided up. They are also happy to help in anyway possible.

I figure as long as you are happy you are rich…
So I guess a better question might be what makes you happy?

Yes, I have no money but I have no debts, I have no car, but I don´t need one yet (would not be able to afford one though). Have a room and I know that I´ll be able to pay for it next month, even though I know I won´t be able to pay for a computer if this one breaks down. Have food and if things got really really wrong parents would be able to help (much to my shame).Have to acknowledge that without the help of my bf, yes, I´d be rather poor and would have to stop studying, which, the end of the day, is a luxury I have paid for.

Being rich is relative to your way of life, I think. Being stupidly rich is having more money than you know what to do with. It must be such a bind.

No matter what you have someone else always has more. Some PH'ers may consider other PH'ers rich. I'm sure those PH'ers look at other people and consider them rich. It's all a question of persepctive. To wit the regular "how much money would you need to retire" threads on here.

I think being rich is being able to have the lifestyle you want.

the majority (I assume) want for yachts and holiday homes et cetera but there are people out there whose only goal is to pay off their mortgage and get a conservatory and when they get there I would say that they consider themselves rich.

personally, i'm not stopping until I have far more money than I know what to do with, and then I can pass it on to my offspring...assuming I have any that is

I went to school with some of the kids of the worlds richest/famous people.

Aside from the kidnap and mutilation (notorious case if you are of a certain age) of one.........

I don't think they had a good time of it. They were generally listless and looking for excitement. Quite often ended in drug abuse and death.

Balance is obviously the key - take all the stress from life and you lose a quintisential human quality.

Obscenely rich is obviously better than being extremely poor.

But may I try it please?(the rich bit you dolt!)

Hmmm, rich? not me. I earn little more than average, my wife similar, but as a joint income, it's not bad I suppose. But not wealthy, or rich like many PH'ers are. I havent amounted to much, I dont think I ever will now, although I have travelled a lot and done some cool things in my youth.

A lot about how you view yourself (rich/poor/happy/sad) comes from the values you hold. I have a frined who is worth close on £40M - has multiple cars (Bentley, Ferrari, Aston, Porsche etc etc) a massive mansion, a helicopter and every other "toy" you could imagine. However...his value set comes from his position in work. He works every hour god sends, still desparately tries to climb the corp ladder even higher and has a disasterously failed marriage and child he never sees behind him. He is fiancially minted but to me he is not rich as he has become a slave to everyhing about power and lost a fantastic wife and child along the way. Being rich is all about being happy with who you are, your position in life and having the time to enjoy the moment you live in with close friends and family. It's about being able to choose your life rather than being a slave to it! IMHO!!!
