Railway station bike racks

I don't know if these are all over the country but they certainly proliferate around London and the south.

I am talking about the stacked sheltered bike racks at railway stations that started popping up a few years ago. I hate them, I sometimes have to spend a few minutes in an agonising contorted position trying to extricate brake levers from someone else cables or putting out my back trying to fix the bike lock.

Another few inches of space in the design would have made everything so much easier and I would no doubt be hailing them as a great idea but they had to try and pack them in didn't they?

I'm pretty sure bike rack designers are failed cycle lane designers.

Agree. They have gone for capacity over ease of use. Cramming them in means they can fit more racks in a given space but you do have to be a contortionist sometimes to get your bike in and out.

So where would you put it instead?

Look out for any with tape wrapped round or other padding.
It’s often covering up a previous saw cut to get a lock off.
