Looks like I am going to be able to say goodbye to the 9am - 12midnight toil of being a City lawyer soon. Parents have just offered to sell me their company which means I can work the hours I choose, in the countryside and outside most of the time, for the same if not more money than I am getting just now.
Anyone else done this. Am I doing the right thing? I know it will be hard work, but it has to be more life-affirming than this. Can't believe the weight it feels has been lifted from my shoulders.

What will you be doing?
Running a boat hire and outdoor adventure company. Boat hire from April to Oct, outdoor stuff rest of year.
Fidning it hard to focus on my current job today though (no change there mind you).
Are you still there?! If the business is sound and cashflow is OK don't think twice, you will be earning the same or more than now and you will be in charge of your own destiny. Plus they'll be doing a good move tax-wise afaik.
There are issues about running a business that make life quite different to employment (of course!) but you're a City lawyer AND you've been near the family business for years - so do what little homework you need to do and then enjoy your membership of the Canoe Owner-Paddlers' Club

I know. Can't believe how much I am going to miss the traffic, Tube, filth etc etc etc.
Only thing I will miss is the good friends I have down here, but they're only a 50 minute flight away, so it's not too bad. They can come for weeks out on the boats anyway.
Aye, me hameland! Whereabouts? You can fly from London City to Dundee now, which may be handy for your mates as it removes a lot of buggering about getting to airports and queing, etc. Just jump on and jump off really. I even had to sling my own bags in the hold at Dundee!

Ha. Will do. Have been tempted to say "Hi Zod" in the lift a couple of times for amusement but have managed to restrain myself.

I'm now more than a little jealous.
The only really good thing about my job is leaving the office knowing that the lawyers were going to be turning documents for hours after I leave.
Value added to client - minimal
Billing - significant.
I'm shortly moving to a boutique bank where they only value bill, so no incentive to work huge hours where they are not needed.

You lucky sod! That's a dream.
I left MC private practice (drudgem drudge, drudge) to become a corporate finance bod for an insurance company. Great job, leave at 7 every day. I thought I'd made a smart move - but nothing compared to what you're about to do!
