Hi
I test drove a 2015 S1 the other day, liked it apart from a couple of things, the gearbox seemed to have an excessive amount of play in it, the gear lever could move an inch or so sideways either way, just wondering if this is normal.
Also there was no footrest for the left foot, which was awkward as I had to either lift my foot past the clutch each time a gear change was required, or, rest my foot on the clutch pedal - not good!
I also noticed that the left hand twin exhaust pipes where sticking out a couple of inches more than the right hand ones which made me wonder if it had had a shunt. It was at an Audi main dealer so you would hope that this would have been checked?

My mum has a standard Audi A1 and I've always found the gear change felt vague, not unuseable but not like a sharp accurate change. My VW Lupo I owned back in 2009 felt much the same so I put it down to it being a VAG thing.
Not to say there's not something amiss with that S1 OP, maybe worth comparing to another one although they're not the most common cars. Certainly cool looking little things and I'd imagine a re-mapped one would go rather well! haha

OP, does not sound right to me. My S1 gear change feels, as said, not quite JDM standard but fairly nice and positive. Clutch can be a on the little light side. The way you describe the exhausts does not sound right..
Just looked at mine and I do seem to have a carpeted footrest area..
