For what it's worth
From what I know, the Disco is a cheaper bet than the Defender. Disco is just as tough and has a few more creature comforts, but has sold in large numbers, so more around and therefore lower prices.
My wife has run a TDi discovery for 7 years and it goes off road as well as to Tescos without any problems as long as it's serviced regular like!

NO WAY!

That isn't a realistic price whatsoever!

My 90 is a G reg and when I bought it it had 90,000 on the clock and had only been used to tow a horsebox!
2 Lady owners! I paid £4,500!

Whatever you do DO NOT GO THROUGH A DEALER!

Keep looking in the magazines, LR Owner, LR Enthusiast, LR World, and don't forget autotrader!

Seriously though dealers are only there to make a profit! They would have bought that 90 for about £5k and are selling it on for £7k, they need to make money somewhere!

Hope this helps!

Graham

The general rule of thumb when buying an older car of any sort is to buy privately. To make it worth his while handling a car at all, a dealer is going to have to make at least a couple of grand on it. a cheaper car, the dealers cut is going to be a higher proportion of what you pay.

get a train ticket oop north. Up here landys seem to be a little more reasonably priced. Ring a landrover dealer in Bolton, Burnley, Blackburn or somewhere like that. I could be wrong but it might save you a penny or two.

I have been thinking about getting a Land Rover as a toy for a while... although what I really want is one old enough to be tax exempt, but with a modified Range Rover chassis and a Griffith 500 engine

-the above price was in a dealership not a million miles from the Peak District

Uhm....not sure what to do here.....figured a dealership Landy would be the way forward, what with all them gears and off-road whistles 'n bells to go wrong. Plan to use it in Scottish winters, so reliability and low mileage are high on the list.

Autotrader has thrown up a lot of cheaper possibilites, but to be honest, I wouldn't know what to look for if going private. All the Landy owners I know are based on the South coast, so not much help.

AHA!

What you want is a series 1!

Some bloke put a Jaguar motor in it and got 130mph top speed! ber me if I'd do 130 in a series 1!

Oh and you can fit a TVR engine in a 90, it's been done, article was in erm the March edition of Land Rover World! What a beast it is! 4.2 litres, MMMMmmmmm

I was thinking more series 2 or very early 3 - tax exempt means it has to be registered before 01/01/73. There was a Range Rover derivative a few years back with a TVR engine, Lichfield I think it was called. The Overfinch ones sound pretty good too. It wouldn't be sensible to fit a powerful engine without the rest of the chassis to match, including brakes and suspension.

I have an overfinch place not even a mile down the road from me!

I occasionally go see what they have in there, god they don't half shift!
