Afternoon All,

I really need a small hatchback as a run around as the Range Rover is not a good town car/run around in terms of size/mass and pouring £200 of fuel a week into it laugh

I quite fancy an Edition 30 Golf Mk5 based mainly on the fact that they have a K04 TFSI lump in them so I assume 350bhp is as easy as it is on everything else with that motor?

It would have to be a DSG one and a three door which I guess cuts down the choice a bit?

Any Golf specific dramas to be aware of? I know about the HPFP and associated cam follower issues from my time with that motor in endurance race cars but we used to throw the motor and gearbox away at 12,000KMS so I have no idea on any long term issues these may have......

All feedback much appreciated!

A man of your experence surely looks at a non 30 spec car for maybe 5k less and mod the life out of it biggrin usual dsg issues with mechatronics, servicing etc would have to be looked at, rust seems to be a factor, wings, tailgate etc engine wise the above inc dv also, then belts, chains etc . But it would be great if you looked into one of these as I'm currently weighing up my options of getting rid of a 520d to do my 25k commute

I have a Pirelli that might be going soon. Same engine as the ED30. S3 brakes, intercooler, Wavetrac LSD, TTRS front arms, full Milltek exhaust, extra set of BBS VZ. Every receipt from new.

I looked at quite a few Ed30’s. They were mostly in very poor condition unless you wanted to pay over the odds. I went for a 8P S3 in the end, and I love it. It is not as sporty as the 30, but just feels special. It manages to put all the power down, all the time, whatever the weather. I went for a manual but truth be told wished I went for the DSG and the facelift model. I think it would suit the car better.

I looked at ED30s and most were either modified liabilities or tat.

Ended up with a stock low mileage GTI then spent the difference on bringing it up to box fresh condition. Rear springs and consumables have been the only issues mechanically. Changed the cam follower (was wearing and the golfs version of the IMS) but diverter is revision G so no need to bother on that front for a while.

Obv with your track record you could buy a tatty version and create magic.

Thanks for the feedback chaps! I was thinking Edition 30 as don't these have the same bits as the Leon TCR/Cup inside them to start with so are low comp and stronger pistons? If it's just a K04 on the same motor as the GTI then agree there is no point buying an Edition 30 at all!

Ideally what I want to do here is build a nice sleeper so remove the Edition 30 badge and fit a TDI one, retain the standard ride height (so I have standard damper travel too for comforts) but run some reasonable dampers on it and probably ARBs to suit, hide some big brakes behind the standard wheels (either make some brackets up to run some spare Porsche 4 pots on the standard discs so go to the same 6 pots I have on the Porsche) and dial 350 beans or so into it. So nothing crazy, just a decent run around that if it does need to do a long journey is fairly capable of it.

On the race cars we used to run 330bhp in WO from the get go use and they were very reliable, hence thinking this figure plus a smidge in a road car would be similar reliability as the duty cycles and time at WOT are so, so much less.

Not the same engine as a GTI. Much difference to the ED30 than the GTI.

I've just bought one for very reasonable money, I think I fell quite lucky though based on how many dogs are around, its done 125k miles too, not in bad condition

As standard they're on the cusp of being an excellent car; their biggest downside is the slippery slope that is the mod stick!

The (S3) motor is in such a mild state of tune that it's almost rude not to map it, but if you map it you will need a clutch (or DSG software), and then you will need an LSD to prevent never-ending one-tire-fires, then you'll want to be able to get those speeds back down again and then you'll...

Or you can just buy an S3 that drives a bit like a well-fettled Edition 30 does but without all the hard work wink

I would (and did) buy a GTI over an S3/Golf R, however. Screw objectivity, GTIs are just better.

Had my ED30 DSG for almost 6 years now and absolutely love it, bought on 73k and still running strong at 120k. High spec, -basically everything but sunroof and xenons.
Front springs, coil packs and rear taillight strip, -only real issues outside of normal perishable parts. I've had it remapped for the whole time (Pendle Performance running 308bhp 270Ib/ft) and recently decided to spend some money to freshen up the chipped paint work and lacquer which was going on the front end. Resprayed wings/mirrors/bonnet/bumper, fully detailed wax, refurbished alloys, new OEM lights (started to cloud over) and Powerflex wishbones and ARB bushes (totaling over 2K for all work) have not only made it look near mint, but totally livened up the handling. A deep clean on the seats also should restore them this summer!

Not planning on selling for another few years yet, anything else comparable is out of my price range and I want to enjoy the money spent on her first.

Hello

I had a budget of about 7k and initially looked at the Ed30. I looked at about 5 cars around the UK ranging from 6-8k and they were all rough. I ended up with a non Ed 30 MK5 GTI for 5k that was in excellent condition. With the remainder of the budget I did the following:

Maintenance: Cambelt, cam follower and full service £800
4x Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 £240

Tuning: 3” downpipe and decat £100
Second hand cold air intake (BSH) £90
Revo Stage 2 remap (£475)

I also added a head unit from the MK6 Passat that had Apple Carplay £180

I then had the car rolling roaded for £60. She made 272BHP on Tesco 99 and 310lb ft.

I’m very happy with my non eddy MK5. It’s quite frugal off-boost, quick and handles well. It’s a nice 4-door grown up hatch that’s fun to drive.

Nice spec GTI, if the budget allows I would upgrade to an s3 intercooler and s3/r/cupra brake setup.

As soon as the missus gets off my case for ‘spending all the money on that bleeding car’ I’ll certainly think about it biggrin

Where's a good source of these? Any dealers who specialise in them?

I bought mine from Transparency Cars in Devon. It’s a chap called Simon who buys older cars from main dealers that are too old for them to sell on the forecourt. It had full VWSH. I can’t see any more on his site currently though. I’d look at the Mk5 GTI forum.

Andrew Chapple is worth contacting, I'm sure he would be interested in sourcing one
