Tec spec shows the Up/Citigo/Mii at 928kg. Anybody know what it weighs with all the unnecessary bits (heater, seats, trim, radio, speakers etc.) removed. Could I get one anywhere near 700kg ?

Misha Charoudin's Sub7Up that you can rent from Apex is listed as being 929kg. It's fully stripped out, albeit with the addition of a cage. I personally can't see 700kg being achievable based on that, but I guess they could just be listing the standard weight. I've searched further but I can't find anything about the weight of that car.

I suppose they may have done a quick diet and lost about the same as a basic cage which would be around 50kg.

In the pictures I see it still has all the lights and a full dashboard but even with those gone it will I suspect still be way too heavy for what I want.

I have the weights of everything down to the last nut and bolt. smile

Windscreen 11kg
Driver / passenger windows 3.6kg each
Rear quarter glass 1.95kg each
Rear glass (boot) 6kg

25kg or so in glass total. Replace what you can with plexi, boot is obv a faff, rest is easy, removing the window mechs and cranks (work out windows!) only saves 1kg a side, so just slap plexi in to the channels for "comfort".

Trim panels (excluding front doors) 6.8kg

Parcel tray 800g

Sunvisors 500g each

8kg in carpet, 7kg in sound proofing headliner has 2kg in.

Hvac unit is 7kg.

Passenger seat is 16kg, same for drivers. Rear seat system is 17kg.

Radio 1.6kg

Speakers 330g each

Centre console (handbrake area) 2.6kg

Dashboard itself 7kg or so, with a few more kg of covers on it.

Tool box 2.6kg

Total weight of car was 880kg to start (wet) with 27 litres of fuel in. So 929kg sounds a bit high, must be the TSI model.

If you have done the deed already what have you got it down to ?

I will be up against old minis which are around 550kg and 180 bhp at the crank so I begin to think it is a non starter.

I've not done the deed, I just have all the information as an auto engineer with access to teardown information, everything is broken down. Closest I have got to an Up is in my girlfriends stocker!

I think you'll struggle to get competitive unless you get really serious with composite wings / doors / bonnet etc, even the roof. What can the GTI get mapped to these days? 150hp or so before bigger turbo? You'd need to transplant in a polo gti engine I reckon to get up in to the 200hp range. I've looked around a few racing minis and they really are very sparse, a triumph in packaging, a bloke who I use for a rolling road had one made from carbon fibre and was sub 500kg! It was pretty much a go kart. I think sub 700kg is doable myself looking at the breakdown, to get to 600kg would be very tough, and expensive. It would be glorious though. biggrin

OK then, with your very useful database, what would the lightest mainstream current or recent hatch, either with a 1000cc turbo or 1400cc N/A engine be ?

The rules say I must keep the original engine block but can modify most other bits.

In the up to 1400cc class it can be a 1400 N/A engine or a 1000 forced (forced attracts a x1.4 multiplier). A 1000cc which I can stick a supercharger on appeals most as they are a lot easer to map than a turbo. To be competitive it needs to have proper suspension and get to around 300bhp/tonne.

I can't find anything significantly lighter than the vw Up. The trouble is you're going up against a very popular car, the a-series engine has seen constant development for racing since it's initial run, as has the mini itself. You just won't get near them without a serious serious diet or mega bucks spending on making that engine spin like fk, where nobody else has done before! Wiki shows the og mini as 580-686kg stock.

List of a-segment cars of similar ilk.

Tata nano is 652kg, but clearly unsuitable with 35hp 625cc rwd! biggrin About as close as you'll get to a mini though, even has 12" (not the 10" mind) wheels. Haha.

Fiat 500 0.9 twinair (yeurgh) 1022kg

Fiat Panda 1.2 918kg

Kia picanto 1.0 928kg

Smart fortwo 1.0 904kg

Suzuki alto 1.0 877kg

Toyota aygo 1.0 877kg

Thank you for doing that.

As you said earlier there is some to loose in the glass, seats and carpety stuff but not enough. Most everything else looks like clip together plastic so not a lot to find there.
