Weird problem with my Tam. The car normally starts first time abet with a fuel tank sensor warning code that I just have to cancel each time I start the car (I've lived with that fault since I bought the car ten years ago as i dont have much of an apitite to pop the access panel on the tank as I've heard it's a real bh of job).

Anyway, recently the car won't restart after turning off. When I try to restart it turns over and I can eventually smell the fuel (so I assume the pump and injectors are working) and I hear all the normal pumps and prestart noises from the engine bay but it won't fire - even if I alarm it again and go through the start sequence once more. Interestingly the display goes straight from the 'Tamora Speed 6' logo into the driving screen (with the Speedo and rev counter etc.), an entirely new experience me, which in normal circumstances I would be thrilled with!

So there are no warnings to cancel i.e the fuel sensor one I always have to cancel before the display would normally go to the driving screen, not even if the door is left open etc.

My guess is no spark.

As the car does start if left for a while (it has aquired a new intermitant fault code - EFI - to accompany the reassuring familar fuel sensor code) I assume the coil pack, plugs and leads are fine, which makes me think immobilizer or something to do with the ecu.....any guesses out there?

Are you saying it starts when it is cold but not hot? If so, crank sensor?

I don't have a diagnostic kit frown

But I've had a good look round the sensors this morning:

Water temp - terminals a bit corroded (dresses to bright so hope ok)

Crank sensor - looked fine but gave a good clear before re-inserting

Now I've no error messages at all (not even my beloved fuel sensor) but a massive misfire from the bank of cylinders using the nearside silencer (only on idle).

As I pull the leads off the coil pack for easy access I double checked I put them back on properly.

I also disconnected each lambda sensor in turn to see if it was defaulting to a rich mitxure but it had no effect.

Given the earlier symptoms I'm starting think about replacing the coil pack as I can't remember ever changing it (the leads and more frequently the plugs do get periodic replacement).

First off thanks for the replys and secondly any final ideas before I spend any money?

Ok...you are right. This caveman is gonna have to bit the bullet and source the sw and cable. Is it obvious which plug the cable fits to? I assume its the spare off the ecu in the passenger footwell?

When this happened to my Tamora it was the crank position sensor. Apparently gave no output when hot but just about worked when cold.

Whereabouts in the country are you? Maybe somebody local can help with the diagnostic cable etc.

If this was a Chimaera we would all be shouting "hot start problem/immobiliser".

But on normal road cars I have had this same fault on a Mercedes ML and on a Saab 9-5, and both times it was a failed (Merc) or failing (Saab) crankshaft position sensor. Indeed, one Christmas, what with this fault on the Merc on Christmas Eve in the snow, and my Audi A8 off the road with (terminal) electrical problems, my only running car was Mr Reliable, my Chimaera.
