It seems like my son will be studying in Paris from September. We live in France but far from the capital and this is my first experience with the French rental market in about 25 years so I'm asking all and sundry for advice and ideas. We know it's going to be expensive, though cheaper than UK tuition fees hopefully. Any tips/advice will be very welcome.

Where do you want me to start?
If you earn in France and have tax returns your best bet is the commercial letters like cdc habitat, however your pay must be at least 3x the rent. If that is a no go,try private landlords on Se Loger or Leboncoin.
Commercial letters usually have rolling 6 year lease, private 1 year not rolling.

Most people start looking 3 months before they want to move as alot of government jobs are last minute moves, teachers, gendarmes, army, impot etc.

We did the same in Bordeaux 3 times for my daughter.Be prepared for alot of head scratching. How they make something so simple,so bloody exasperating ,I don’t know.

Enquire with CAF if you can receive aide de logement, also ask the university about digs.

A Dutch friend’s daughter and a friend’s grandson have both found student accommodation family quickly. I know the grandson was in Saints Cloud and his budget would have been restricted - the Dutch girl, less so.

A quick search throws up https://en.location-etudiant.fr/residences-etudian...

But I am sure there are plenty of others.

The grandson did not make because of loneliness. The girl found herself a rich Colombian and lived happily ever afterwards. smile

Thanks both for the links. It looks like he won't be able to get accommodation until he accepts his place and enrols and can't do that for a couple of weeks - frustration indeed.

It will be painful. Expect to provide evidence of your financial resources and possibly a bank guarantee (even though neither are strictly allowed). You may be expected to sign the lease yourself. Student digs are the best bet if you can get them (cité universitaire). If not, flat-sharing is probably a good idea. Renting is horrendously expensive, many landlords will try to screw you for the deposit.

I run a housing legal clinic for a local housing charity, message me if you have any questions.

Thanks. It's on hold this week as he struggles with his bac but expect questions next week. I'm expecting much of what you predict and am particularly anxious as although we live in France and bank in France I don't actually work in France which is the sort of complication that French bureaucracy struggles with sometimes.
