Down here in Cornwall this sort of thing is not unusual. Loads of unrecorded mining in the past, roads and property built over it then you get a bit of unusually dry or wet weather and a blimmin great hole appears. Used to live in a particularly bad area for it and over the 5 years I was there the road twice disapeared down holes you could have lost a transit van in... fortunately no transit vans were passing at the time

We had a big hole appear in front of our garage last year - turns out we have a well under our drive. Mr Big had just been manouvering the cars in the drive and felt something give. Thankfully no damage to the cars. Later found out that our neighbours also have a well in their front garden.
