Hello

In the last few weeks I've noticed a noise when travelling around 10-25mph - it's just a sort of clicking sound. Depending how fast I'm travelling depends how often it clicks, but it is basically one revolution of the wheel per click. I asked the mechanic I usually go to about it and he said he can hear it, but can't work out what it is. He put the car up on the ramps and had a look at everything under the car and said it's all in good condition, nothing is falling off etc. So it's safe to drive - but it's really annoying me. He said he's pretty sure it's something just stuck in the wheel somewhere. I have a gravel driveway so I'm pretty sure he's right - probably a stone stuck somewhere up there.

However, I have done some googling and seen that this is common for stone to get stuck in the the brakes and they make a screeching sound - but this isn't screeching so I'm pretty sure it isn't in the brake disc anywhere. I don't know a huge amount about cars, so I don't want to try and find it myself and end up not being able to put the car back together.

Anybody have any ideas where to start? It's been there a few weeks, and I've been taking speed bumps etc at a relatively high speed in the hope of knocking it out, but it seems like it is there to stay unless it is removed manually. It's at the front of the car by the way.

Thanks

I've recently (few months) fitted CrossClimate+ tyres to the Legacy. Constantly getting stones stuck between the tread and getting the clicking noise on each revolution.

A ticking noise can be a driveshaft CV joint starting to give up , you may get away with stripping it down an putting some fresh grease in. Does the clicking become more noticeable when the steering is near full lock compared with when dead straight?

When your mechanic looked at it do you know if the car was on a 2 or 4 poster ramp, did he take the weight off the front axle to prod around and spin the wheels? Sometimes it is difficult to find odd noises when the components are not under load.

Hello

Thank you for the replies.

I called the mechanic this morning to ask him about he CV Joint, but he said that a CV joint would only make a noise when the steering wheel is on full lock, and wouldn't make any noise at all when driving straight.

When I took it in for him to take a look at he checked the wheel outside the car while I was driving slowly, then jacked the front of the car up to have a look underneath - he didn't put it up on the ramps.

SOLVED: Took it to another garage and he said the discs are a bit corroded and so the pad is scraping against it as the wheel rotates. I had the pads replaced about 6 months ago but not the discs, He said its all safe - just have to put up with the noise or pay to get new discs and pads!
