Used ‘Thetford’ blue in the porta loo and it’s does the job well enough. Now need to replace and notice several other alternatives, some half the price. Stick with ‘Thetford’ or save some beer money?

Been using the stuff they sell in Aldi from time to time, £6 for 2L. Currently on the eco / green one which does quite a good job but when that runs out I have the blue one to try. Also use their flush water additive (pink one). Recently a special buy so they my still have some in your local branch.

Still the worst job in caravanning though, none of my lot adhere to the no solids rule but then we often stay on sites without facilities anyway.

Just finished 18 months full time in our motorhome, and I've used pretty much everything on the market in that time.
The Thetford Green is what I've had best results with, I just wish it came in bigger bottles (and without the supersplash pouring design). The blue diamond green is the next best.
Actually the Thetford/Trigano green they do in France was the best, but that hasn't made it over here for whatever reason.

I tend to avoid the blue as it can restrict where you empty. Some sites don't like it, and you can put green down a regular loo pretty much everywhere.

Be careful of things that are half the price but need twice the dose (I'm looking at you, Elsan).

Thanks for comments, looks like elsan for a trial run.Found the Thetford blue very strong odour
as well as pricey. It’s only me in my old caravan for long weekends at steam rallies and such like.

I have found the Thetford aqua kemp's green stuff much more pleasant, https://www.thetford-europe.com/gb/products/toilet...

click on this link and read what others use such as Bio washing tablets etc

Useful links, thank you.
Definitely dislike the thetford aqua blue odour, to me it’s chemical industrial whiff is too strong.
Maybe I should try the green then,

I stick with the Thetford stuff - if you don't empty it for months it still works. Only worth using the cheap stuff if emptying every day (I tried the cheap stuff stinks after a couple of days...yuck)

I use this stuff...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/One-Chem-Concentrated-Cas...

Easy to get a measured dose; nice niffs; does it's job on the doings; and it's 'green' too so can be used on sites which do not allow use of the more traditional blue fluids.

There is an element of the community that uses cheap bio washing liquid in the chemical toilet. The bio bit helps to 'break down' the contents apparently and the whole thing doesn't smell so chemically as the blue/green liquids. I've tried it in the motorhome and it seems to do the job, but we don't pass solids into ours!

Yes yes

This is a regular topic of discussion on MH forums. Some folks use all kind of different things and claim great results and great cost savings...

I'm surprised at a few recommendations for the green, I've found it most ineffective, requiring big doses and frequent top ups between emptying and I still end up with a barely treated or broken down slurry, whereas the blue just does the job with no fuss, a slick smooth lump free liquid akin to fragrant engine oil.

We find the best thing to use is biological washing liquid. No particular make, just whichever supermarket you use “essential” Range.

We have used this for the past 2+ years, and found that it breaks down solids as effectively as the Thetford blue or green, and doesn’t smell of chemicals while in use.

You do need to make sure that all the Thetford stuff is cleaned from inside the tank before you change to bio washing liquid as the chemicals in the Thetford stuff work against the bio part of the washing liquid. I did this by putting bio in the cassette, filling with warm water and leaving a couple of days. Then emptied into the house loo, repeated, and then use bio.

I find that half a capful (the cap on the cassette) is optimal, and add water just as you would to the Thetford stuff and bobs you’re uncle.

I do find emptying the cassette far more pleasant than when I used to use the chemicals, as the waste being emptied smells more of washing powder than chemicals or cr@p.

Quite agree.

Last weekend, I was emptying our Porta Potti at the Elsan point on a site near Cheddar Gorge, which was effectivetly a porcelain WC set into the ground. Due to how it was configured (and me not really paying as much attention as normal) I experienced what I can only describe as 'facial splashback'!! hurl

Fortuitously I was wearing a pair of ridiculously expensive 'Carrera' sunglasses that I bought on a particularly hedonistic lad's trip to Las Vegas 15yrs ago when I was a bachelor and it was nearly $2 to the £1, I made a killing on the roulette tables, my mate and I rented a suite each at Caesar's Palace for a relative pittance, all was golden!

Then here I was, a decade and a half later, a middle-aged dad, emptying the beige 1970's portaloo that my parent's had in the 80's and have gifted me as the least impressive family heirloom ever, getting a faceful of effluent, but those bad boys kept it out of my eyes. laugh
