Hi all,

I'm waiting for my Leon Cupra to arrive and wanting advice from current owners regarding the fuel they use? I know it can be used on 95, but I'd rather pay the extra amount and use 98 Shell V-Power.

What are everyone's thoughts on this? What do you guy use? Would it be worth it?

Any hints/Recommendations welcome!

Thanks

any performance orientated car i have had i always put super in 100% of the time. most of the time shell v-power, sometimes tesco momentum or the esso super as theres a few of them by me.

i dont see the point in having a performance car and skimping on fuel, or tyres come to that

If you want 290PS and (closer to) the official fuel consumption figures use either V Power, Tesco 99, or BP Ultimate. Or if you're planning to keep the car a long time / for a lot of miles.

If you're not that bothered use whatever is cheapest or most convenient.

Just looking to get the best out of the car. V-Power is what I was thinking anyway. Just wanted to see what others had been using and would there be a difference with the fuel.

They’re mapped to run on 95. I ran my Audi’s on super but I know I was wasting my money. I now run my mustang and my wife runs her cupra 300 on 95 because it honestly makes no discernible difference. Any fuel economy improvement would be offset by the increased cost anyway.

They're mapped to run on 98 but will run on 95 "with reduced performance".

In my experience, VAG turbo engines are more responsive than most to octane level when tested on a dyno.

Is that what it says on the inside of the cap? If so I stand corrected.

My wife’s car is the front wheel drive so can’t handle it’s 300PS anyway so an ever so slight reduction in power wouldn’t matter.

Fairly sure the cap says "98 (95)" like most of the higher performance VAG stuff.

Owner's manual says "Super 98 / Super 95 (with a slight power loss) ROZ".

Fair enough, I stand corrected then. OP ignore me I’m talking bks. Mercifully my mustang being a naturally aspirated yank tank is built to run on dog st fuel!

Edit: I wonder how slight the loss is?

I think only the lower power 2.0Ts have 95 on the sticker, S3, Golf R etc. state 98.

The power loss won't be much, a couple of percent at most.

Premium fuels are like premium tyres, or deciding between OEM brake pads or Halfords ones.

For me, on a shed, I'll use whatever is cheapest/most convenient. On a car I care about I'll use OEM / premium parts where I can. No different with fuel.

I only use Tesco 99 in mine.
Miles cheaper than V-power and better than shell 95

Only issue is, there isn't any where close for the Tesco fuel that does the 99, whereas, Shell V-Power is a trip down the road....So probs worth going to shell just for being close to me and on route to work as well.

The place I used for a re-map swear by certain brands of fuel.

They make such an issue of it, sometimes I wonder if they are just making excuses when promised figures don't materialise. I don't think they have anything to prove as they have been at it a long time and are always busy.

I have a 67 plate 4Drive and have done 30,000 miles in 18 months.

Every 4 fill ups I use something premium, usually Tesco, rest of the time just use the cheapest.

Weirdly it seems to run smoothest on Asda 95.

No problems with engine, and can't tell any difference in power on any fuel.

My MY14 Cupra 280 flap said minimum 95 on it. I ran mine at Stage 2 for 4 years which ran APR Stage 2 high torque file which required 98+ Ron.

We did some logging one day on RR with Momentum 99 in the tank, at no point did I tell the tuner it had M99 in the tank, after a few runs he looked at all the graphs, not just the peak power/torque graph and said have you got Momentum99 in the tank? I was like yeh how can you tell, VCDS showed a lot of timing being pulled.

A few days later after a cycle of Nitro+ (when it was called Nitro+) we did the same again and the difference in timing was night and day, plus it made peak 12bhp more, both days temperatures were similar as well.

I did have to run it with 95 in it one day with the 98+ map in place, I just didn't drive it hard, filled it up with 99 again asap.

As said above if you don't care about the car then do what ever is easier and cheapest, if you care then put decent fuel in it. I also changed the oil every 5k in it.

Shell v-power or super unleaded on all performance engines.
