On my 996 it was a split rubber hose near the water pump. The AA man and I replaced it on the side of the road in about an hour.

Hose clamp on my 986 split a week ago and caused a trickle leak. Also thought it was the pump. Changed the drive belt at the same time aswell.

Coolant expansion tanks sometimes crack. It could be that.

As others have said water pump & the hoses can be an issue. Worth getting it checked by an indy/OPC unless planning to do this yourself. Would be reluctant to start the engine again given how much is coming out & it might cause the engine to overheat. The pump alone is about £300 from memory
