Hi, I am thinking about buying an RS6 Avant, from 2008 - 2010 depending on what I can find. (I have just missed a very nice green one!)

I wondered if anyone who currently or very recently owned one from that era would be willing to share reliability info. I have had two Audis and both have been horrifically badly behaved despite having full Main Dealer Service history. I have had five Range Rovers in the same time I have had the two Audi's and they have not given a tenth of the trouble between them. All I can assume is I have been unlucky with my Audi's so far and that Audi's PR machine is better than Land Rovers.

Given the wallet denting my current A6 C6 Le mans 3.0 TDI has caused, £9,000 in 18 months I thought I might give Audi one more go and swap it for a similar vintage RS6 Avant as apart from fuel probably not going to cost more to look after if I find a good one.

Any rough or specific running costs / advice / stories would be very much appreciated and will help me decide whether to give one a try.

Owning a petrol Range Rover means I don't think the fuel consumption is going to take much getting used to. Its more the service costs and reliability issues.

Many thanks for your time. Cheers, Ben.

Having also run an expensive Diesel Audi with the same figure bill I can sympathize.

Used to enjoy this owners thread on the C6 RS6, should give you some good intel:

Hi Steve2,

Lol glad yours is a good one, I'd hold on to it tight!

So far....... Swirl motors, Cam Chain Tensioners, The ignition barrel release motor thing, ECU issues, Electric Boot issues, and a host of electronic gremlins, ghosts and ghouls, EGR , leaking fuel tank, Injectors, Glow plugs,.! And there are new things developing too. Yey! Every couple of weeks at the moment there is another issue with it.

If you think your diesel has the ability to throw up a bill then the RS6 takes it to a whole new level, my mate still shivers at the cost of running his RS6 (his V10 R8 has been considerably cheaper to run) which nearly crippled him financially.

ZX10R .... Thanks for that, it would appear you either get a good one or a bad one... hmmm needs more thought.
Although, to be honest you are no help at all!! smile Cos my other dilema was to chop in my faithful GSX-R for a ZX10, something I had put out of my mind until I saw your nic!!!!! lol..

Lol what year ZX10R as there are certain ones I'd skip, also how tall are you? As I find that the newer ZX10's feel like a mini moto (I am 6'7 though) which is why I now have the S1000RR because it's a much better fit & the reason I went & bought a 2005 ZX10R. smile

I bought one 3 years ago and it's been great, 68k on it when I bought it, now just a tad over 88k. If you find a decent trusty mechanic it should be OK. Best get a comprehensive check over before buying. As said before two main big bills are for coolant pipes and oil pump seal. My mechanic fixed the pipes without taking the engine out and a there are tales of the oil pump seal being fixable without removing the engine. Parts can be expensive, £870 for front discs but bargains can be had by taking advantage of offers and discounts etc. TPS also do a decent discount for my mechanic. The engine is sublime and when you put your foot down at around 70 - 80 the response is ballistic. It's never going to be all that great at the 0 - 60 sprint, or particularly agile on twisty roads, its a heavy beast, but as a great all rounder I love it. And think of the Grandad points in years to come when you tell your Grandkids you used to have a V10 family wagon...all they will know is electric/hybrid nonsense.

Thanks ninepoint2,

That is the sort of story I was hoping for! It really does seem like its all about getting a good one for any Audi, I shall be doing a F tonne of research on any RS6 before I buy. RE the brakes and stuff, wont be so bad to what I am used to, the Le Mans one I have is crazy prices for tyres and brakes, my bad as I was not really paying attention when I bought it, just went for a reliable Audi diesel did not realise what a fun car I was buying. Just its a wrong'un the particular one I have.

Many thanks again!

The Gixer is a sweet bike perfect weapon for the road my S1000 is an ex road race bike so it has a nice amount of trickness to it, I have exploited it on a good few occasions. Dashcams you say, I counter those with some special positioning of the very small number plate smile

Yea even after jumping off the BMW & onto the ZX10R it's still an animal it just feels so much rawer.

Hi OP

I have had one of these for just over one year having previously owned E60 M5 and CL600

The Merc was a nightmare in terms of electrical reliability- beautiful car and that V12 biturbo!!! Bit a nightmare in terms of reliability.

RS6? I bought it at 93k miles. It has now done 103k

Nothing and I mean nothing has gone wrong!!

It had already had the oil seal repaired

Mines had a remap to 650 hp - it is a proper weapon. Nothing I have owned before shifts like the RS6!

@ZX10R

Trickness is good!!!! Sounds like you have that set up pretty sweetly. Ahh sounds cunning. I have the smallest plate I can but its not where I suspect yours might be!! smile If ever stopped, I would conceed the plate but I would always staunchly defend my safety exhaust. I think they are a definitely a must to keep car drivers alert to your presence. I know mine has saved me a good few times in the last few years. Agree modern sports bikes are getting way too small. I blame the likes of Marquez for being pint sized. One of the reasons I reckon Scott Redding struggled. The lad has a massive size disadvantage at 6 foot 2 or whatever he is. Those 05 ZX10s are just legendary !! Total animals!

Thanks for that, so that is two good ones then. I guess it is just make sure you find a good one and then make sure everything is done. Funnily I was wondering about a Merc but then they seem prone to the same good or bad ones. I know they used to say Friday afternoon or Monday morning car, but based on my experience, with Audi so far its that you need to buy one from a Thursday between 10am and 1pm and avoid the rest!

Much appreciate your input. Thanks. I think based on that I will look to get rid of the Le Mans and replace it with and RS6. I will just make sure I take my time, get it inspected and budget for a few remedial issues. Then in 12 months after buying it, I will resit my driving license test!!

Last thing? Can I ask what year yours is out of interest. No worries if you would rather not say.

Cheers.
