A new NPD petrol station just opened near me, usually known for discounted fuel they had a big flashing sign TRY OUR 100+ OCTANE FUEL. This stuff normally sells for huge dollars but it was only a few cents more than 95.

I'd just filled up with BP 98 octane (which cost more than the 100+ stuff).

Is this a local thing or has anyone tried it?

I think NPD has it in quite a few places but I haven't tried it yet. They are building an NPD station here soon so I will definitely be trying it, the nearest 98 is 1.5 hours away so usually I have to put up with 95.

Have just filled my car with this & done a 260 km trip. I normally run 98. Can't tell any difference. Am no Lauda/ Prost
Spoke with a senior NPD rep, He assured me it is proper petrol, no alcohol. Cheaper than BP 98.

Nice.

Be interested to hear your thoughts after a couple of tanks of 100+

Shame that I'd just put 600kms worth of BP 98 in my car then spotted the new NPD just over the road.

Think you'd need to be Lauda/ Prost etc to tell difference.
Read a German car mag many years ago comparing 98 vs 100 in a standard Boxter. Difference was 2-3 horsepower. I'm using 100 because cheaper than BP 98. NPD new in town.
Where are you & driving what? Cheers

I think it can take time for the engine to adjust, maybe three fills, the first fill will still have a few litres of 98 sloshing around. When my computer reads zero kms to empty there's still 10 litres left.

I drive a Blade Master, looks like a Corolla but has a 3.5 V6 motor.
I live in the foothills wop wops, closest town is Rolleston, 50kms away.

Had to google that, not familiar with it. Sounds quick. Some nice roads up your way.

Some cars are certainly more sensitive to octane level than others, especially when turbos are involved - the difference between 95 and 98 is very obvious with my Legacy GTB, not just more power but smoother, more responsive, better low down torque and more economical (enough to balance out the higher price of 98). I'll be interested to see how it feels on 100.

Incredible difference

No trouble at all believing that, it would have to be an extreme situation to even think about risking 91 in mine!

AFAIK from about 2001 onwards (when they changed to Denso ECUs) the knock detection and response was much improved, putting 91 in a 1990s turbo Subaru would have probably detonated the hell out of it and caused major engine damage.

I used it in my (not legal) classic Formula Ford at my last race meeting. Car has fairly high compression and I don't run it on 95. I can't get 98 so usually use avgas. Car ran well on it with no apparent loss of power. However I will have to find something to help out with the exhaust valves as the 100+ has no lead and I don't have hardened valve seats. Avgas is still leaded of course. It was over $1 cheaper than avgas so I liked that bit and it is easier to get.

Topped up with the 100+ octane fuel yesterday, only 25 litres as I still had a half tank of BP's 98 octane.
Paid $2.25 a litre which was 12 cents less than BP Ultimate.

NPD claim that typically the fuel is measured to be 101.5 octane, be interesting to see if there's any performance difference when I'm running pure 100+

How's everyone's experiences of this fuel over the last year?

Mine started off promising, but after two months of consistent use I started getting random engine warning lights when the starting the car cold and with less than 100kms range remaining... the engine would run a bit rough and the throttle response was awful, but then would clear after about 5kms. This has happened a few times and my local Euro independent specialist mechanic couldn't diagnose it.

I spoke to a few members in my local Euro car club last weekend - one Golf R32 owner said he thinks the NPD100 ruined his injectors, a Lambo Murcielago owner has had inconsistent trouble with it and a 2019 Honda Civic Type R had to have an engine replacement with only 2,000 kms on the clock.

I'm going back to BP98 for the time being. Apparently the NPD100 comes out of the same 91-octane generic tank as Z, Mobil, Caltex etc and they just add their own additives blend to boost it up to 100-octane...

No problems for me, ran it in the Legacy GTB for 6 months or a year (until selling it) and it went well. I never did a real comparison to BP 98, may have gone slightly better on NPD 100 but probably not a huge difference. Miles better than 95 which was the next best local option.

Have put it in the MX5 a couple of times without noticing any difference, you wouldn't expect any difference with a low tech 90s NA engine though.

I have used it a couple of times in my JDM NSX - not noticed any difference between this and BP 98 to be honest, except the cost - NPD 100 was cheaper than BP 95 on the day I needed fuel, at least in Dunedin & Oamaru last weekend.
No check engine lights or error codes yet.

I filled up 3 weeks ago, BP 98 was $2.30, NPD 100 was $1.95.

Since switching to 100 octane my fuel economy is 9% better and my 'butt dyno' says I've got more power. I love the stuff*

  • No, I don't work for NPD smile

It was $1.88 in Dunedin last weekend. Cheaper than most 91 in Wellington!
