This idea came to me while trying not to do enough work. What do you think we make box cars, we race them down a hill we have a barbecue/pie, we raise some cash for good causes....

We tried to do this for local village festival, with an inter-pub race but ran into difficulties with council + plod with regard to doing it on a public road, ie they wouldn't let us (not even a little used back road). I think it would need to be private ground - maybe a hillclimb venue backwards would be possible.

A pistonheads soapbox derby!..........
an excellent idea, perhaps draw up some rules and regs and let people build their own over the winter when its cold and dark!. I would be more than happy to help if we got enough people involved, I'm sure the members of PH could come up with some interesting vehicles involving plywood and pram wheels! Only problem would be location but there must be a suitable place somewhere.

Sounds like a hoot. The Porsche Club do this for charity at their annual summer event. Some of the designs have got..errr..very serious. We are talking ultra lightweight chassis with kevlar body panels ultra low-friction joints and proper lightweight wheels and tyres!!!!

It'd be fun to do one with a fixed maximum budget (e.g. £200) or something that prevented the excesses of nature above.

You would need a hill-climb venue or certainly a private road. I've got a private road (and its downhill!) but its only 100m and I think the neighbours would complain...

What about an off-road downhill course ??

Easier to sort out permissions, probably

does anyone seriously think we have a chance of using a hillclimb venue?! surely we can only write to them and ask!? might be worth some consideration. i guess location is going to be the only issue really. could Ted use his vast knowledge and many contacts to give us a helping hand.............

to let any interested parties know, i will be speaking to a guy form Bristol City Council tomorrow about the possibility of using a venue. It will be in Bristol (surprisingly) and if all goes well, would be an absolute blast!

There is a place near me called Butser Hill, one of the highest in the South Downs I believe.
During the winter when it snows you will see all sorts of canoes/kyaks/sofas hurtling down there - no reason why not in an off road stylee box cart

I'm in!

There must be some stately homes with a suitable bit of tarmac - how about Goodwood?

I'm a member of the Mid Cheshire Motor Racing Club (albeit a fairley silent one normally), but they run Scammonden hillclimb venue. It's actually an access road to a dam owned by Yorkshire Water, but MCMRC have an agreement. They are a good bunch and would probably assist if we let them enter (or paid them a bit). It's got all the armco etc, but it's mostly in positions to stop people crashing uphill, not down. Probably need the St John's Ambulance there as well !

And it's up north (beside M62) so may not be convenient to all

I've got to be careful about giving events the PH endorsement for legal reasons, particularly events where people might be injured. Where there's a claim, there's some bloodsucker trying to put you out of business remember. Unfortunately I don't currently have the resources to check out the implications/or lend support.

Good point Ted, I think any event would have to be done with the co-operation of an established motor club with suitable experience and insurance.

fair enough, I totally understand, the last thing anyone would want is to put you or the company in jeopardy.

That was the sort of venue I had in mind, or maybe Leigh woods for a steeper challenge

If the South West is suitable for a venue, then there must be someone at Castle Combe events who would either get involved, or know someone to talk to...

I can get in touch with them if needed.
