Could well be the fob battery. Flashing an LED doesn't take a lot of power but transmitting a signal strong enough for the car to sense does.

I'd say battery. Tried your spare key?

Calm down flapping gets you nowhere.
I think on them if keyless entry try holding the key fob to the underside of the steering column while you press the clutch in and the start button.
I think that’s where the antenna is on those.
So it’s normal starting procedure but holding the key fob to the underside of the steering column while you do it.

Maybe try inserting the key into the ignition, turning it anti clock wise and then turning it close wise. This used to work on high end vag cars, albeit those with two batteries when the main system battery ran down (which I don't think your year tourag has), but worth a try.

When you stay the ignition stage one comes on, are you sure? I mean, is it definitely stage one, and not just the same functions/wake up when the key is inserted?

Does the ignition barrel make a noise when inserting the key?

Also, as dumb as it sounds, try moving the steering wheel a bit when turning on the ignition. I've seen partially stuck steering locks cause similar faults on other cars.

Put a new battery in anyway. Won't do any harm.

Not 100% clear. Is it keyless start I.e push button and not key in a slot...

You need to twist the key in the slot - push and hold won't do anything.

Even those with keyless start still have the slot.

Always use a known battery brand too, like Sony.

I bought a big strip of lithium batteries (CR2032) and they were all a fraction too small or thin, to work in my Fiesta keyfob, at all, whereas a Sony battery works instantly. I had been having issues with the boot release on my Mustang too and that was the same cheap battery issue .

I had a car totally die electrically at Pump 1 of a local petrol station several years ago. It had an electric handbrake so was stuck.
Had to get the AA to recover it home, whereupon it worked perfectly.
I later discovered that the large petrol station sign concealed a mobile mast.
I never took that car back there and the problem never recurred.

A few times in my motoring life I’ve had cars that seemed to get themselves into a tizzy and act as if they didn’t recognise the key. It used to happen quite regularly on a Peugeot company car, and it did it on a brand new Merc I had on extended demo.

Each time locking the car, and standing back for a moment, then unlocking the car and trying again worked.
