VW Touran best engine

Hi peeps!
I'm looking to get a used VW Touran, I was looking at a few in the £5-6k range but can't decide whetever I should go for the bit older trusty 1.9 diesel or the newer 1.6. I've heard the 1.9 probably won't come with a DPF, is there a way to check it? The car will be used for short commuting and weekend days out with the fam. I'm worried the DPF might clog up and cost me in the long run as it will be used for short trips on a daily basis during the week.

We ran a pair of Tourans each with the 1.6 TDI for 3 years (from new) as loan cars; I think they were 63 or 14 plates. They did mostly lower mileage trips with a few long runs mixed in. As they were loan cars they probably got driven fairly hard throughout.
Think they had a couple of door locks under warranty but no mechanical issues to speak of. Never saw a DPF light spring up on one.
