AUH and DXB - US Specs Cars

Hi all,

Hope you're all well. I've been back in the UK for nearly two years after 9 years in AUH, but an opportunity to come back to AUH has come up, and I'm considering it with all it's ramifications. However, naturally the most important aspect is my wish to be driving around in a V8 again!

I've been on Dubizzle having a look at what you can get these days. I was think default choice...Camaro/Mustang. Nothing too fancy.
I see that US Spec cars seem good value and am interested, although I never bought one when I was there before. I'm not bothered about them not being quite as posh/optioned up as the GCC ones. And I understand that selling them on again will be harder (although I had two manual gear cars when I was there before so I know that feeling).

So two things really:

- Is there a major downside to buying these that I don't know about?
- Is there a problem registering or insuring them?

Because of all the flood and accident damaged cars coming in the authorities required that the following agency confirm that the car was Carfax clear...

Insurance is 3rd party only AFAIK.

For me unless it was at least half the price of a GCC spec car and I could absolutely say it had not been resurrected from the bottom of Lake Tahoe then I wouldn't bother.

I went and viewed a North American spec Camaro at the Dubai Autopark.

No declared damage, low mileage etc...

There was clear markings where something had been welded to sill to pull it back out. Door gaps were all over.

Most cars I looked at there all had signs of a story or two.

Ended up buying near new from Al-Futtaim, 5 years warranty, 5 year service plan.

If you are buying a car that was imported from the US, always check Carfax. Many dealers will claim that their imported cars are clean but when you check the VIN on Carfax it's not always the case

Stay away from non-gcc specs to save ton of headche for next passing, selling, depreciation, maintenance etc. Every friend of mine ever fall in the trap of US spec cars for saving money, came out crying after an year of use. 90% US titles that come to Dubai are flooded and restored in sharjah with ghettos.
